Hello--
If I am using a chipped up prop (nice battle with rocks id say) 15 x 17 on my 4.3 OMC / Cobra Outdrive will it have an effect on my WOT RPM's? I am maxing out at 3500 RPM's WOT. Engine is running good and smooth. I have another prop 14 1/2" x 19" in perfect condition. Should I try that one? This is a new used boat for me. I have had it out once so far.

Thanks,

Ron

Re: Chipped Prop Question

Obviously it's impossible to determine how severe your prop damage is...but you should be aware that running a damaged prop, particularly if you feel any vibration, will put unnecessary wear on bearings and potentially your prop shaft. This result in far more $$$ than a new prop. I would change out your chipped prop and replace it with new or have it refurbished....and also get WOT rpm's up to proper range.

Re: Chipped Prop Question

I wouldn't use a chipped prop anywhere near WOT. It will be out of balance and the vibration it causes can harm the gears in the outdrive. It would be worth the money to have the prop rebuilt, that's a lot cheaper than having the gears rebuilt.

Re: Chipped Prop Question

If 3500 is your maximum rpm, there is a good chance that both props are too big. Finding out what size is recommended by the OEM is the best place to start. How much metal is missing from to prop?

Re: Chipped Prop Question

Running your boat with a damaged prop. is no different than driving your car on flat tires, get rid of (or repair) the prop., check your prop. shaft for runout and then do your fine tuning. These guys are right, any shortcuts will cost you more in the end.
