Gday guys, got a mate thats got a few questions, he getting a small RIB and looking at putting either a 9.8, 9.9 or 15hp tohatsu on the back, $ isnt really an issue, however power to weight is, i sigested getting the 9.9 and removing the restrictor plate etc seeing as its a detuned 15, however there is a 15kg difference between the 9.8 and 9.9, with the 15 the same weight as the 9.9, it will be used in the ocean as a wave jumping boat btw

any info is greatly appreciated guys

Re: Choices choices

In the States, we currently only have the 9.8 and 15, as we only have 4-strokes here -- and they are all heavier, model-for-model, from the old 2-strokes. Weight issues aside, we try to go with at least 80% of the horsepower rating for the boat. When we rig a Walker Bay Genesis RIB or similar, we always recommend at least 15 hp, unless it will only carry one person. The 9.8 motors don't quite have enough thrust to get these RIB's on plane easily with the added weight of several people, but are OK with just one.

The 9.8 2-stroke is a completely different build from the 9.9 2-stroke, hence the weight difference. What does your Australian Tohatsu dealer say about motor sizing for your boat? What does the boat manufacturer recommend? Is the RIB a light model, or is it heavily built? If it's on the heavy side, a 15 will be the better bet.

The 9.9 or 15 2-stroke would be my choice if you don't have to carry them around. If you have a bad back the 2-stroke 9.8 is the winner.
