I recently bought a 1980 Skeeter with a 1977 Johnson 140hp. The engine runs great, but there is no choke cable. In order to choke the motor I have to take the cowling off open choke, start motor, close choke, and put cowling back on. This is not a problem on a lake, but I also fish on the Missouri River, not really the place to be hanging over your engine while it's running. Does anyone have any ideas. Thanks.

what do you mean no choke cable, there is not a choke cable. you have a fast idle lever on your control unit, that increases the idle speed for starting, you have either a choke button, or you push in on the key to activate the choke.

remove the cover, and have someone, with the key in the on position, push the choke button, or push in on the key. you should hear the solenoid click. (this depends on which control box you have) the choke solenoid is connected by a link lever to the carb butterflies.

i cannot tell by the diagrams, but some motors have a push/pull button, on the front of the lower cover, near the cowl lock. this is 3 positions for the choke, all the way in the choke is off, middle it is in the auto position, to be operated from the control box, all the way out, is manual choke.

Does he mean the small spring wire that runs from the plunger to the choke arm on the carbs is missing? That shouldn't be to hard to find...

How do I create a new post?
Got a 1977 johnson 140 outboard and after I push the key in, it doesn't "click" or choke anymore?
