Choke lever or fuel enricher lever?

I have a a few older 25 hp Johnson motors. One is around the 1977 year and the other is around the early 90's (I think). Regardless, the 77 has the manual choke lever and the 90's has the fuel enrichment style choke. I have never really liked the fuel enrichment lever.

Since the '77 has a hole in the block and I will never be rebuilding it, can I swap the carb from that motor to the 1990 and get rid of that fuel enrichment setup?

:welcome: aboard Dirk...

WOW that is a really tough question to answer. My gut says probably not being how they are so vastly different. But that really depends on both engine setups and your ability to adapt the change over. So post some pictures of the two for better suggestions...

At work presently. If I get a chance I'll snap a few of both engines this evening.

Preliminary inspection of both motors shows the same number of fuel ports. Locations of choke knob and enrichment knob are identical on both motors.

Looking at various part numbers stamped into different areas of the motors are also showing up to be the same. I just don't know if there is something internal that is different.

And to be honest, I don't really understand how the fuel enrichment knob set up works. From actual use of the different motors, I, and all my friends that have these small displacement, older Johnson's/Evenrude's, much prefer a plain, old choke knob.

Before anyone asks, yes I have read the owners manual on the operation of the fuel enrichment knob.

I do believe my abilities are well with this project. I just got done changing this motor from a remote steer over to a tiller steer. The type of fishing we do does not condone the use of remote steer.

Thank you for the response

?????---The fuel enrichment unit on the electric start models is a VAST improvement over choke flappers.------But if you do not understand the simple concept of it all you will have problems !!!!

This is a pull start unit.

Obviously I don't understand the concept and I would rather not learn it. I have had very good luck with plain old choke carborators. I have never had good luck with this enrichment system. I had this same system on an old Skidoo snomobile when I was younger. I hated it then and I've found nothing to support that the system is an improvement on boat motors. Still no love for it now.

I just want to know if I'm wasting my time swapping these carbs out. Apparently, I was finally able to ask a question that no one has heard before. I was kind of hoping someone else had done this carb swap.

Having trouble getting pics from my phone to my computer. Will try at a later time.
