My Merc outboard 60hp-engine has always started like a charm. This weekend, It cranked and cranked no start. I opened her up and hand choked she started up fine. Is there a way to tell if there is an electrical or solenoid issue or is the choke just bad and needing replaced. She kills just fine when I push the ignition key in, if that operates a choke? Thanks!

Re: Choke Troubleshooting

The choke is operate by pushing the key in so if it won't choke when the key is in start position but will when in the run position nI would think the key switchis shot go back to the engine with a voltmeter and ck the choke/ primer solenoid to see if it has 12 volt to it in each position

Re: Choke Troubleshooting

By choke, I am thinking that you mean an enrichener system. If so, the attached troubleshooting guide for an enrichener system may be helpful in addition to Laddie's excellent advice.

Re: Choke Troubleshooting

Thanks for tips: I Tested the enrichener no volatage with meter, took hot wire from battery to enrichener, presto clicks and worked. Now to figure why? I'm going to check key switch and trace to engine, has to be a break somewhere. Good thing, as I priced enricheners Whoa!!! Ouch!
