my boat was hard to start so I pumped the bubble and held in on the choke got it to hit and then after that it would shut off.I held in on the choke again and it hit so I continued to hold it in it stayed started and idled fine.I took off down the lake letting off the choke and it was fine.I then idled awhile and it was popping and spittin and I couldn't get it to start so I pumped the bubble and held in on the choke and it hit, so I did what I had done the first time and it was ok. It's a '97' johnson 175hp faststrike any ideas on what could cause this? I forgot I found a leak of gas between were the hose enter the motor to the other side inside the cowl looks like a seperator or something and the bubble wasn't keeping pressure

Re: choke

If fuel is leaking from anywhere around the fuel system where it enters the motor when you pressurise the fuel line bulb air will be sucked in when the bulb is not being pressurised and is likely to result in fuel starvation and the symptoms you describe. You should cure the leak

you can identify the components concerned from the parts diagrams at http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=fe734c8d0d019e57d43e69c77c477f81.
Most probably there is an O ring or gasket that requires replacing.

If you can keep the engine running just by pumping the bulb then that leak is probably all that is wrong.

If you still need to use the choke even when the leak is cured then you probably should be thinking about a full carburettor clean.
