When should I see the choke closed? I have never seen it closed. Not when the engine is started cold or warmed up. With engine cold, I pump the throttle 4 times, and it starts right up.

I'm obviously not a carb guy... Again, never seen the choke closed. How do I check this?

thanks!!!

Re: Choke

it should be closed when the engine is cold. If your in florida and its 90 out, but the motor is cold, the choke should still be mostely closed.

Re: Choke

They are supposed to be closed when cold, and open as the engine warms up.
Why yours is open ????? Who knows. Broken, adjusted improperl, wired open by previous owner.................

Since Mercruiser never used Holley, hard to say how to fix yours or how it should be.

I guess the saying comes to mind - "If it ain't broken, don't fix it." ;)

If you are looking after you start up the engine, it may already have opened.

If it is open even before you start the engine, but it still starts with no problem, then I suggest leaving well enough alone.

Re: Choke

if it starts and runs cold with choke open, the mixture maybe set too rich.

Re: Choke

Yup, max throttle 3-4 times then crank. I'll recheck again later today if the choke is closed before I start.

Backed off ?

Backed off ?

Usually if it has an Electric assist on it after a few hours or years the Electric heating coil burns out so people just lossen the screws and back them off.

Most people operate there boat in weather warm enough they don't need one.

I fixed mine becasue my 454 is a little cold blooded.
