I had an interesting experience last weekend concerning my prop.

I've always run a 15 x 15 3 blade alloy cupped in very good condition, perfect WOT RPM, good economy, good hole shot etc. Never had a complaint. Couple of weeks ago I lost it (long story) so I fitted my spare, a 15 x 19. My old 302 is tired so I don't hammer it, just cruise and troll. The 19" was doing the job o/k but I needed a new spare prop so I payed a visit to the local shop in the marina. The only prop he has for my boat is a 15 x 17 3 blade uncupped reconditioned prop covered in dust. It was cheap - I bought it.

Fitted it last weekend, it's a different boat now! Hole shot is better, it turns tighter, it doesn't list as much when turning hard, it 'feels' like it bites better and the best part - economy has improved considerably (navman fuel computer). Although I don't make a practice of it I did run flat out for a few minutes, WOT RPM is well within specs.

The moral of the story? IMO follow the guidlines when choosing a prop, but trial and error can make a big difference.

Aldo
