I have a 16' Seanymph with a 40 hp Johnson. I can get a deal on a 1988 2.5hp Johnson to troll with. Is that enough horsepower to push my boat at 1.5mph-3mph even in rough water? It is a 2 cylinder. Maybe I should get a 4hp?

A 4 would be better, but I thnk the 2.5 would be OK if your only purpose is trolling. Regardless, in either case you will need to change out the prop. Go with the lowest pitch available, sometimes referred to as a "sailboat prop".

The 2.5 probably has enough power, but the problem is it is a single-cylinder and it will rattle your teeth out. Unfortunately all 4 strokes up to 6 hp are now single cylinder. The 6 hp old-style 2 strokes were twin cylinder. Tough choice.

A JonhhyRude 4HP Deluxe would be a fantastic motor. I have an '89 and LOVE IT. Very smooth runner.
