Re: Chris Craft or Regal?

Thanks for the reply. I knew Mercruiser was Black but was not aware of Grey OMC's.
You are definitely right, I will find out exactly what drives are in use.
Nick
In that era OMC and Mercruiser both used Chevy small block V-8s....so did Volvo Penta.

In that era the only sterndrive that was "white" was the Volvo Penta.

Mercruisers were and continue to be Black.

OMCs were a charcoal grey...pretty dark grey.

From what I have found Regal used Mercruiser and Volvo Penta in that era. I have not found any 1989 Regal Commodores listed for sale with OMC drives.

You need to find out what drives each boat has

You know Steve Stepp sold Velocity to Regal and then bought it back due to Regals poor build quality.

Just something to think about I know you guys who one a Regal seem to talk highly of them but they are well known as poorly built boats.

I've never owned one but hear the same exact things here about them and have for years. I was very surprised to read the posts praising them as being "well built".

And the older CC's were a "crap shoot". their earlier fiberglass boats weren't that bad but somewhere along the way they also developed a poor record.

Many 20yr old CC's can be bought at near give away prices down here and I've seen them end up scrapped because of no takers at anything other than scrap prices.

I've personally seen Regals of that age with rotten transoms.

with the condition of these boats as described, I wouldn't buy either of them at anywhere close to "book".

Re: Chris Craft or Regal?

Well----I'm guessing that most of the replys here are from guys that have never owned either a Regal or CC---the comment that the CC your'e looking at is not the same as the proud "Chris Crafts" reputation was built on is 100% correct--I think that Comp has also had it's share of troubles--no doubt.

Remember---your'e looking at a 20 year old boat and the most important thing now is condition and which one you prefer.

I have owned my 1988 280 Regal since new--probably one of the longest original owners around---no doubt I've done repairs and maintance---but as with all things -boats-cars-trucks-phones, ect------some companys had good products and some had some that probably did'nt measure up.

The Regal your'e looking at is the exact same as mine--rear door-curved windshield-big front sunpad,,ect-----1988 was a style change--thats why I bought it---some of the 83 to 86 or so 277 Regals had stringer issues and by the time my boat and later(88-89-90 and so on) ones came around, they corrected any hull issues---I use mine a lot--2800 hrs in 22 years of ownership and have never had any fiberglass issues--no rot-no bottom blisters, ect

The one your'e looking at 99.9% has Merc 260's and Alpha drives--neither boat is a Blue water boat---the Regal has a very flat bottom and has made a great river boat-fast-they are great planing boats--mine ran lows 50's when it was new and still runs a solid 46-48 on a GPS.

We boat on the upper Mississippi River and when Regal came up with the 277 back in 1983---it was one of the fastest, roomiest interior, boats around--there was a LOT of these boats sold in our area and I have many friends who own and have owned Regals and most of them regreted trading or selling them----good luck--hire a surveyor--check it out top to bottom---if you end up buying the Regal--I can't belive you won't like it---Steve

PS--I don't work for Regal

Excellent stuff from real experience there ^^^^

With Steve's mention of deadrise, do we know where Nick plans to run this boat? Radar tells me the Chris was Saltwater . . .

Re: Chris Craft or Regal?

Regarding the drives, the Regal has Mercruisers and the trim rams were just rebuilt on both drives and all lines replaced 5 hours ago. I haven't asked the CC owner because I know he won't know. He just bought the boat 6 months ago and soon after was diagnosed with cancer and hasn't been able to work. Sad story for sure. He's not technical at all and is leaving me messages each day about other people coming to look at the boat...

As for where we'll be playing, it will be on the Tn.River from lake Guntersville to Nickajack.
(That's Huntsville Al to Knoxville Tn)

Perfect. Been there done that, and the relatively flat bottom will be fine.

I just helped a friend buy an 88 28' regal comodore.... it is early year so old style

The one your'e looking at 99.9% has Merc 260's and Alpha drives

That's what his had

the Regal has a very flat bottom and has made a great river boat-fast-they are great planing boats--mine ran lows 50's when it was new and still runs a solid 46-48 on a GPS.

Tell me that the older one was not the same.... I can't have him outrunning me

We boat on the upper Mississippi River and when Regal came up with the 277 back in 1983---it was one of the fastest, roomiest interior, boats around

dang it he's gonna outrun me isn't he
At 6'4" I can actually stand up and walk around in his without ducking..... can't do that in the wellcraft

I can't belive you won't like it

Even his old style one is really nice

Re: Chris Craft or Regal?

Sounds like the Regal is looking better all the time--QC is right---if your'e going to run on rivers(and I assume the Mississippi up here is very close to what your'e going to be on ),you will like the flat bottom-better hole shot's--lower RMP at speed-which means better gas milage.

I have ran mine from Mpls-St Paul area down to just north of St Louis--aprx 700 miles and 27 or so lock and dams( 1 way), these boats get about 1.25 MPG upriver or down (oh well, I always thought gas was the cheapest part of boating).

Get more info from the Regal owner--trim rams and hoses are minor,( mine are still original), I would want to know how many hours are on the engines, drives, what's been replaced, what's been whatever ????????????

PAY someone to look it over--BEFORE you buy it, if you spend 300-500$ and find out things are not right----it also gives you more facts to negotiate with, if theres any hidden issues.

Lastly, the Regal has.....

tri axel trailer--I could sell that up here for 3000$--easy.
Genny--so what--have if tuned up or repaired-or remove it and sell it.
Heat---it gets cold---trust me it's -10 here tonite
350's-----enough on that
Camper---just general maint--I'm 2 years from replacing my 2nd set----#3
on the way--not bad, 12-13 years on a set
rear door--HUGE DEAL--1987 Regals and prior did NOT have that door--you
had to climb over the back--BAD DEAL.
Engine sync--10$ part--after a while, you can hear the engines and feel them
smooth out--I don't even use mine anymore.
Send your wife out to pull up the anchor--I do--She's gotten pretty good at
it--hasn't fallen in yet lol;)
Buy a handheld spotlight
Buff out the Regal--remember--all those broken hinges and snaps cost about
10 cents--and will get you a big discount--I have had friends dig rotten
old boats out of the mud-fluff and buff-make em look like new with a little
elbow grease
YOUR'E BOATING ON A RIVER---RADAR?????

Wanta know what "RIVER RADAR" is ???????

Take some guesses and I will tell ya later

Good luck Steve
