Thanks to all... It worked out great, and I've had a huge smile on my face ever since... Now I can really get rolling with the hull and getting the new transom assembly cleaned up and ready to go...

Just received my SELOC manual in the mail over the weekend as well, so I'll be educating myself further in the weeks to come... :D HUGE SMILES!!! :D

Very Nice. That worked out perfect. Are you taking it out of the boat all?

Nope, just going to let it sit on the deck til I get ready to put it back in place. I think I may replace the starter, alternator, fuel pump, etc... etc... Just because I don't want to have to pull it again in the future, although all in all it wasn't that bad once I finished the Gantry and got the trolley together. The worst thing was disconnecting all the wires, cables, and hydraulic lines...

Transom Assembly Removal Preparation and question?

Transom Assembly Removal Preparation and question?

Hey guys, I'm getting ready to remove the transom assembly and transom plate, bell housing, etc...

These sacrificial nuts, or caps, or whatever they are won't budge, and I'm just thinking about cutting them off. I plan on going back together with all new hardware, so does anyone see a problem with just breaking out the grinder with a cut-off wheel???

Here's a picture... It's an older picture, but just for illustration purposes. I've labeled the offending part...

Re: Transom Assembly Removal Preparation and question?

Ok, I was hoping I'd have someone chime in, but I'm headed out to remove the transom assembly. Probably having to cut those bolts off, but I'm using new hardware in the re-build, so oh well... Videos later...

Re: Transom Assembly Removal... Video...

I got most of the transom assembly removed, or at least dis-assembled tonight. It was really a mess. I'm so stoked I picked up the newer used transom assembly a couple weeks ago. It was definitely worth the $150.00. I should have the rest of it off soon, maybe tomorrow, and then I'll concentrate on doing all the glass work for the hull and build the new swim platform. I just didn't see the point in trying to finish "around" the shot transom assembly...

Oh yeah, more good news, all the ply around the Transom opening is solid as a rock. I figured as much, because last year when I installed the trim tabs, all the shavings were dry and light in color, so I'm very pleased about the Transom.

Here's a short video showing the extent of the corrosion.

I am sorry I did not see this earlier. Those anodes do not move. You take everything off from the inside.

Re: Transom Assembly Removal... Video...

No worries Jay...

I actually got the Starboard one off with some vise grips and a small sledgehammer... LOL... It was threaded on the inside. Hoping I can get the other one off without damaging the threads once I get it all out of the boat. The bolts look to be in great shape, don't think they are brass, but whatever they are, they are corrosion free. The only thing holding me back now are the remaining steering components on the transom assembly. I want to make sure I don't damage anything. everything looks to be in good working order back there, and I think I may just need a new helm pump. That would save me a small fortune! Also going to have to figure out the water inlet tube on the new bell housing versus the old, as they enter through the transom plate and point in different directions once they get in there. I'll get it all figured out, I have plenty of time, and I can only work on it a couple hours at a time, so slow and steady wins the race...

Really nice job man.
Thank goodness the motor game out perfectly.
On the anode bolts, They must make diffrent styles. On mine, the anodes unscrew from the anode bolt on the outside but the nut that holds the bolt on is in the inner transom.
You got a great deal on the new assemble. good job.

Re: Transom Assembly Removal... Video...

Thanks, the gantry worked perfectly and not a single creak from deck...

In reference to the anode bolts, mine were just as you described... The anodes unscrewed from the outside, but that bolt has a flange on it and then there is a nut and washer on the inside of the transom plate that snugs everything up and is what ultimately has to come off prior to removal.

Need some advice here guys... Peanut Butter Question...

Need some advice here guys... Peanut Butter Question...

I had posted this once earlier in this thread, but didn't hear anything at all...

"I'm thinking that on some of the deeper blisters, I will certainly use some CSM cut into small patches and fill those areas in, but on the places where I just ground very shallow, couldn't I just use some thick peanut butter to fill those in and sand em down before re-finishing, i.e. painting??? If I have to cut hundreds of little patches for each blister and try to work inside the cure time of my resin, that's going to be a huge PITA..."

What are the thoughts on just mixing up some thick peanut butter and using it like a filler in the shallower divots???

Now that I've got the transom assembly off, I'm finishing the hull, and am thinking I'll do the swim platform this week if I can get my glassing supplies in by this weekend, well Friday actually... I may have to source them locally to get them in time. Any suggestions for "marine" fiberglass supplies in Atlanta???

R & M Marine... Thanks, I'll actually be up that way this weekend. My fiance lives in Lawrenceville... I"ll check him out...

Lake lanier is my goal. I said I wanted her back in the water by July 4th of 2012, but I actually want to be able to take in the fireworks there on the 3rd of July and spend the night on the water...

Fireworks on lanier are a special thing. Especially with Sunset Cove now open for the 2nd year in a row. We had 6500 boats easily this july 4th, it was like a florida sandbar minus the police activity :)

Re: Need some advice here guys... Peanut Butter Question...

Well, that's my goal...

After checking around and calling quite a few marine suppliers & repair shops, I think I'll just wait a week & order my glass supplies from U.S. Composites. As much as I would like to form a good relationship with a local shop. Some of these guys want up to $12.00 a yard for 48 inch wide 1.5 CSM.

digitizedsoul, I'm still waiting to hear back from Robert. We spoke briefly this morning, & I'll talk to him some more later. I've been out of town, so flying back in this evening.

How much glass & resin???

How much glass & resin???

I'm going to start by re-coring my swim platform & filling the divots in my hull... Was thinking of 10 yards of glass & corresponding amounts of resin & hardener. Plus I need some cabosil and, 1/4 inch chopped strand fibers for peanut butter. What do you think guys?

Hey for all the techies, I'm posting from my new android based smart phone, the ruggedized G'zOne Commando. While sitting on an airplane... LOL...
