To me, it all depends on how soon you want to get back on the water, and how willing you are to "Fight" with NOT having the proper setup to get it done. I have found over the years that it's all about knowledge, tools, and setup. IF, BIG IF, you don't mind dealing with these then go for it. If,you do, then PAY FOR IT!!!

Personally I would tackle it myself. Every thing I have paid someone to do on my boat, car or house, I have thought after that I could have done the work myself and saved the money. It may take more time, and some engineering on things such as getting the motor out etc... but as you said, the knowledge you will build, plus knowing it was done how you wanted it done will be better in the end.

In my perusing around today I found this....

If you put heavy duty casters on it you could pull the motor and set it in the boat. Use some 2 x 8's for tracking boards.
Can you weld or know any welders. should not cost that much to make this gantry. OR make it from wood.

On one hand if you've got the time and the willingness to learn it definitely can be done. The down side is we procrastinate so the project may drag on for a while.

If you pay for the work from someone experienced and get a good deal you'll be safely on the water in no time and can put your work into other areas.

I've thought about welding up a gantry and pulling the engine in the boat... I can weld, and have a friend with a welder, so that is a possibility. I think I even have plenty of room to set the engine down and still work around it... Still pondering that one... Honestly if the guy that has offerred the work wouldn't mind working out a deal where I can help, (he is moonlighting afterall) I would definitely go with his offer, help and observe that things were being done properly, and get the knowledge in the process...

Hey guys, just testing out the embedding thing. I know this is old video, but if it works, I'll have many more to follow.

Outdrive removal video #1.

Let's see how that works...

Well that worked like a charm... I have a lot of sanding, and maybe gimbal removal on the agenda for tomorrow. I won't bother to video either of those. Sanding is boring and gimbal removal was just covered by Friscoboater... Thanks again, for the gimbal video and the general video advice...

Unfortunately work got in the way of my plans for sanding and possible gimbal removal today.

I do have a question:

Take a look at the corrosion and pitting on my Transom Assembly and let me know if you think I could just remove the whole mess and media blast it. Re-build the assembly, steering pin, etc. basically make it like new, then Powder Coat it and re-install with all new seals, etc. The cost of a whole new transom assembly is daunting, especially when added to the cost of a new SE 106 outdrive, which I definitely want to go with. There's also the re-hashed video of the outdrive removal embedded here for a better look at the mess I'm dealing with.

Thanks...

Yeah, I'd have it blasted but with a very fine media. Don't want any pitting. Might want to try putting some heavy coating of Naval Jelly on it and see if it will cut some of it. that stuff is very acidic so be careful with it.

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

So if I get it all cleaned up, do you think Powder coating would be a good idea, or would painting with the rustoleum and valspar hardener do the trick. I'm kind of concerned about how to finish it after watching and listening to Jay's video about painting his outdrive and getting the paint to stick to bare metal...

I do believe I'm going to try and remove the engine myself, either with the gantry in the boat, or by utilizing the oak tree. I would just feel better sweating out the details myself as opposed to paying someone to do it. If I run into something I just can't handle, then I'll bring in expert help...

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

So I've been extremely busy with work and such, therefore I haven't gotten any actual work done on the boat. I have however been brainstorming and coming up with ideas to build a gantry in the boat and pull the motor in place. I think I even have plenty of room to set it down and be able to immerse myself in the engine compartment to re-do the fuel lines, steering, and shift cables, etc...

I need a question answered. I was thinking of pulling the gimbal and transom assembly and trying to clean it up and re-paint it, but the corrossion is pretty bad. I've seen some project boats and such on Craigslist and am wondering if I'd be better off getting a non-corroded Alpha one outdrive and transom assembly and just re-building the whole mess, or at least using the non-corroded transom assembly and attaching the new SE 106 outdrive to it???

What do you guys think?

Hey that's my boat in post #83! That rig worked out fine for me, but then again I was only lifting my engine up 18" to change the starter.

Good luck with the rest of your Chris Craft overhaul.

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

Hey Luhrs28, that's cool about it being your boat. I'm actually thinking of building a "T" shaped gantry so that once we get the engine raised up we can roll it forward and set it down inside the cockpit. This will allow me to get all around in the engine bay / bilge and re-wire, run cables, re-do the fuel system, pick-ups, etc...

I'll get some pics up when I build it, but that will probably be after the hull is done... I'll probably end up videotaping the whole engine removal process and posting it here...

Yes you can do lots of things much easier with the engine out of the way. I'm already planning to yank mine again in October so I can re-do some stuff I'm not 100% happy with.

Re: CHRIS CRAFT "Viking" 1982 Cabin Cruiser Restoration (With Pics & Video!!!)

So here is a crude diagram of what I plan to build to pull the engine in the boat and set it down in the cockpit area. I don't see too many problems other than whether or not the floor of the cockpit area/roof of the rear cabin can hold the weight. I imagine it can. Me and my buddy, both over 220 lbs can stand up there with no real flex at all in the floor...

Let me know what you guys think... Thanks...

That Oughta work as long as the travel arm will hold the weight of the engine.

Yes that should work fine. Just move the engine real slowly so it doesn't start swinging around.
