1980 Chrysler 100 HP outboard Model #1002HOAN used to run like a dream two years ago, good compression, good power, but then started having electrical problems. Stalled at first, then wouldn't start back up, drained battery, battery not recharging, acts like it has a short somewhere, but not apparent. I have taken it to several "pro" mechanics to be charged while they learn what it is not. End of year replaced power pack and it ran for a short awhile, now acting up same way again. Also, overheated last day of use last year, probably needs new impellor, manual not specific to this model and hard to tell where water pump is. Appreciate any help!

Hello smiley 8 and welcome to iboats. The impeller you need is sold by mercury and their part number is 47-803630T. They run about 14 bucks. You may want to consider a new thermostat and gasket when you get it running. You will need to pull the lower unit off to get at the water pump to replace the impeller. If the old one is all busted up and you cant find it all you will have to go searching for the missing pieces. Otherwise your water system may be plugged.

With the electical prlbems I would start by verifing that you have a good spark. What kind of plugs are you using and what do the tips look like?

Re: Chrysler 100HP electrical problems, won't start

Thanks for the reply Eurolarva
I had to take a break after a recent boating accident involving a flying anchor and my head!Pretty unusual, but I am alive and feeling very lucky to still be on this planet, spent alot of time with my family this week. Ever heard of such? More if prompted.
So, yesterday I pulled the starter because it was turning slowly and locked up, first of my electrical steps. I also pulled the lower unit to get at the water pump, the empellor doesn't LOOK bad, but how do I tell other than if it were in peices...its still plyable and intact. I will look for a new one anyway, how sure are you of the part number, do I need to confirm it somehow with the old one? Anything else I should do for mantenance or check while I am this deep? I have a leak in this area and need a seal package. The lube is coming out like milkshake and I have been changing it out often to compensate, now I would like to replace if I can find the bad seal. Any idea where I can order the kit?
Thanks
Smiley

Bummer on the lower unit. I hate it when that happens. You also get funny looks from your coworkers when you say your lower unit leaks. The impeller should be changed if it is more than two years old. Here is the link to the parts for your motor. These are mercury part numbers so you can order them from your local mercury dealer. I know it seems funny that mercury is selling chrysler parts but it is a long story. here is the link 1002HOAN Chrysler Parts

The starter probably needs new brushes. They run about 30 bucks for the kit. When looking for that leak in the lower unit look around the bearing cage near prop. Alot of times fishing line gets tangled in there and messes up the seal. Also get some seals for hte vent and drain screws. Those also tend to leak. They are plastic like washers so you may want to get a dozen from mercury.

Bummer about the boat anchor. I got clobbered a couple of times on the head with a musky lure. They are about the same weight. You are going to have to use something else other than an anchor to lasso those pesky Jet Skiers. I prefer a 22 rifle.
Good luck

That's a nice motor Smiley8( :) ). Before you just change seals on l/u, change the seals on the fill and vent screws...and then if it still leaks do a pressure test with the l/u off...that should tell you exactly what seals need changing. The seals I see going bad mostly are the fill and vent screw seals, the shift shaft seal, and the driveshaft seal. The propshaft seal can go also but I just have not seen that one much on that particular l/u, but do check for fishing line around the propshaft...that'll kill a seal fast...just a few thoughts :)

True, True. They are like mosquitos, buzzing around. I usually just try to egnore them, but maybe I have learned the value of a good blow to the head. It sure got my attention!

Is this site of Mercury's a good one to get the seal kit, too?

Regards
