Chrysler 135 - only starts with throttle advanced

Hi,

I have a Chrysler Magna Force II 135 outboard from my dad. It hasn't run in a long time. Cranks over well but will only start with the shifter in warm-up and throttle advanced. Before I just go willy nilly adjusting the linkages is there anything that I should be checking first? Dad is looking for the manual but any help in the mean time would be awesome. Short summer north of the 60th parallel....

Thanks

FIRST---BEFORE you do anything else: Put in new plugs. Champion L20V, (cross reference #322) UL18V, NGK BUHW.

These engines are notorious for fouling plugs and the first symptom is hard starting or failure to start

Re: Chrysler 135 - only starts with throttle advanced

Hi,

I've replace the plugs, and can't get the motor to fire at all. My dad did have it running about 10 days before he gave it to me. I have tried the cold start procedures posted.

I haven't worked on an outboard motor since forever so any help would be great. Not even sure where to start checking. Is there a simple way to check for spark at each of the pistons?

Any other simple checks that I can do to narrow down what the problem might be?

Thanks again.

Hi and thanks,

Found that I had spark by grounding a plug to the block and having my wife crank the motor over. Nice blue spark....

Lowered the motor from trailering position to run position and the motor didn't even hesitate. Guess I learned something or maybe I have an intermitant in the wiring... will trailer it out tonight to try it out.

Thanks again for all the help.
