Hi, I just bought this boat ('72 Century Trident) and noticed that there are cracks in the head. Haven't been able crank it yet because the starter is dead, but will this still work? I mean are there water jackets behind those cracks or is it just cosmetic? Thanks in advance!

Pull the cover off and have a look in there.----Perhaps a drain was plugged and the water froze.---Sometimes folks overdo it with gasket sealer and plug drain holes.

That's the exhaust chest.
The water jacket/gasket was probably plugged and froze over the winter???
Probably a 76/77 motor.
The screws holding the cover on MIGHT be really hard to get out???
The gaskets are still available.

I'd start it and see if the leak goes to the cylinders?
NO?? then if it leaks cover with silicone.
Yes??? Try to remove the cover and seal from the inside.

Before it gets put away for next winter, fix the drain under the cover.
It's probably full of sand/crud and gonna crack worse,

Thanks for your help.

Ok so I got it running and oh boy does it gush water out of the crack and where the po did not put in bolts. However it doesn’t appear to be leaking into the exhaust chamber. Also the surgeon that worked on it last left some goodies behind that I found when I removed the cover. A block of wood and some rags. They were dry but kinda burned.

Quick follow up question. When you say clean the drain under the cover do you mean like at the bottom of the housing down towards the leg? Or like a drain that’s part of the cooling system?

Talking about the outside cover.
It's a water jacket too and needs to be able to flow water around the whole cover, especially a the bottom.
Looks like the surgeon had the cover off and knew there was a problem.

There are some welding rods on TV that show welding things together.
Might find something like that and try to piece the broken pieces together???
Maybe a GOOD welder that can work with the thin aluminum?

I fixed a corroded lower case with sillycone.
The motor was never flushed (salt water) and it ate the casing causing pinhole leaks.
