My Chrysler 20 HP with remote control will not hold idle. I use my gasoline treated with fuel stabilizer and do not exceed the recommended oil to fuel ratio.

There is no idle speed circuit in this carburettor only one jet. The motor runs well at 3/4 to WOT but it will not hold idle and that makes changing gears with the remote very difficult.

Please help!

Try choking the motor before you shift. Does this stop the motor from killing? If so it is probably fuel related. Best thing to do is rebuild carb and fuel pump and replace all the fuel lines and clamps. The carburator is probably the culprit. Even with stabilized fuel you can still get water in there.

Eurolarva:

If I choke the carburettor it drowns the motor and because it will not hold idle by choking I kill the motor faster.

The gasoline pump is new but the carburettor has been serviced before a year ago. I didn't do it and I will have to learn to deal with it.

Regards,

Robert

On the top of the carb above the choke there should be a recessed flat head screw. This is a mixture adjustment screw. This is adjusted in 1/8 turn incriments every 10 seconds until the correct setting is achieved. The procedure is described in the manual. Turn this screw clockwise until lightly seated while counting the turns. Now turn it back to where it was and post how many turns out it is.

The choke test should only be done real quick. Just goose the choke when motor is dying and a lot of time the motor will come back to life.

Pull your spark plugs and post what they look like. Are both black and gritty, Clean, brown and dry? My guess is your carb needs adjusting but you could have a blown head gasket or it may even be electrical.

sounds like exhaust leak into engine cover and chocking it with fumes. have you tried running it with the cover off? If not take the cover off and give it a try. when I got my boat it was doing the same thing and someone here told me to do this and it ran great with the cover off. Turned out to be the exhaust boot had a small hole worn in it. I took it loose and shoved it on the block a little further and tightened the boot back down. Problem solved.

The same thing happens with the cover off. I will clean the carb and check what happens.
