Re: chrysler 20 tries to engage gear whilst idling

Hello Boxertommy and welcome to Iboats. Remove spark plug wires and place the motor in neutral. Turn prop by hand in both directions. Do you hear a clicking noise? If so it is probably out of adjustment. There should be probably 6 bolts and nuts holding the middle covers on the motor. When you remove them you should see a hex shaped nut about 1 inch long conneted to a linkage on both sides. Turning this nut either clockwise or counterclockwise will adjust the motor shift from forward neutral and reverse. Put shifter centered on neutral and adjust till there is no clicking in either direction.

50 to 1 is the correct mix. YOu should also change out the lower unit oil. Look at it and make sure it is a dark amber color. It should not be milky white or water should not come out of it. You will also want to consider an impeller for the waterpump also. These should be replaced every other season.

Mercury sells parts for chrysler. Do you have a merc dealer there? Post your model number and I will see if I can find you a mercury parts list.

The prop on my Chrysler 45hp (1972) spins slowly while in neutral, is this something that can be solved with the same solution as above?

Yes. I have a 45 hp chysler as well. When you have it in neutral the prop should spin freely forward and backwards with no clicking. Just remove the motor covers and adjust the linkage nut. I am not sure which way you need to turn it but spin prop with finger while slowly turning the adjustment nut. There will also be a small nut next to the long one. This is a lock nut to tighten the two together when you are done. I believe you need a 3/8 inch wrench.

Merc parts only go back to 1978 on the 20HP chryslers. I use this site to find parts that look similar to mine and then order them. The part numbers listed are Mercury numbers. I have had pretty good luck in the past doing this. A lot of parts are still the same as they were years earlier. Here is the link mercury link

I read your post I could be having the same problem. 35 hp chrysler I dropped the lower unit to repalce impeller. When I put it back togather the prop spins while in neutral. I can turn the flywheel and prop turns. There is a linkage connector that runs down the backside of the lower unit I had to disconnect it to drop the lower unit. Is that the small and long nut you are referring to.
