I recently bought a mid seventies Chrysler 25hp from a guy on craigslist. He said it needed a good carb clean and it would be good to go. After cleaning the carb and putting new plugs in it a got it able to start on the second pull damn near every time, even when its cold. With that problem fixed, I took it out to the lake. I backed off the landing in reverse just fine, but when I tried to engage it into forward there is nothing there besides a grinding noise. I am good with other motors but this is my first boat project motor and am foreign to what it could be. There is no problem in reverse, but I'd rather not drive around the lake in reverse all day if I could help it. Any ideas on what it could be? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have a 1970 35 hp Chrysler that is related to some 45 and 55 hp Chryslers except piston bores in the era. I have not heard it compared to a 25 hp. But! I feel some shifting problems are common to Lower Units shift rods being centered (adjusted properly and Control Boxes In sink).

Do you have any history on the Lower Unit as to when it was serviced last or would shift F-N-R properly? Do you have a manual to know if it has a coupling that has to start at the same time to center the shift rod to allow F-N-R?

Post a pic from the engine side with shifting mechanics with cover off and full motor showing. I have a feeling it will be simpler and that you need a Clymer Manual that shows you the shift rod process. A Shift Rod IMO says it needs to be centered to get all gears. A quick test is to shift the rod manually to see if you feel F-N-R. If so, mark the rod and see if your Control Box is putting the L/U in the 3 positions.

The Pros Are On The Way! Maybe my ideas will help or goggle search the matter or grab a Clymer Manual. I’ll hope it’s a needed adjustment vs worn dogs in the L/U
