Chrysler 318 manifold replacement

The engine developed a clicking sound over this past summer, which I assumed to be a lifter problem, but the yard mechanic, tells me it is from a leak in the manifold. I have never heard of this being the case for what sounds like a lifter. Also I removed the manifold as I knew there was a leak and discovered a small crack. My question is do I need to replace both manifolds or just the one with the crack. The people selling the manifolds of course say to replace both. I'm just trying to understand why. Thanks, Bill

An exhaust leak will sound like a tapping noise. The reason to change both is the fact that if one is failing, the other is closely behind it.

I'm glad to hear that as I was concerned about the tapping. The engine ran fine, both manifolds had been replaced in 2008, I believe the winterization of the motor was at fault. There are 3 plugs on the bottom of the manifold, when the engine was winterized they only removed the lowest plug, ( this would have been from last years winterization ) The manifold has small pockets where water could have sat even with the one plug out, thus the reason they put 3 plugs in the manifold. I can't prove to the yard that they did not winterize the boat properly as it was from last year. It is just a hairline crack about an inch long, I know it will get worse, the manifold looks good inside, I have to assume the other one would be also. So given this why should I change both manifolds. Could there be a compression problem if both aren't changed? Thanks

Ayuh,... Did they remove all 3 plugs from the other manifold,..??

If not, I'd suspect it'll also have problems...
