Chrysler 4 cylinder tilt trim died, where to start?

Got the FrankenChrysler back on the boat yesterday, tilted the motor up. The trim/tilt ran very weakly but tipped her up. A minute later I tried to put it just a little higher, and got nothing. Would not go up or down.

Confirmed power from battery to trim/tilt wires. Put a hand to the trim motor, was not hot at all.

Can anyone tell me where to get started with troubleshooting this? I was about to take it apart and then decided to seek advice first.

And, if it's well and truly dead, is this the correct replacement for a late 70s Chrysler 105 -- http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=112035&gd_row=24&session_id=414336439

Thanks!

If you currently have a three wire tilt motor, then that is the correct one. However, before you go and buy a new motor and wiring take off the top cap There is a bimetal switch inside that opens during an overheat condition and the contacts may be corroded. You may also have a broken wire or a connection that came unsoldered. Remember to also check the quick connects for corrosion.

Thanks, Frank. Took the cap off as suggested, cleaned the bimetal switch, checked for obvious breaks and desoldering, found none. The lines coming in have continuity, so wasn't sure where to go from there. I'm constrained for time, so I ordered the replacement, and will likely look to take the old one apart over the winter either to fix if possible or just learn about how it works.

Ok, my new trim/tilt motor should be here Tuesday. I have the old unit removed from boat and the valve body removed as per the two page instructions RRitt wrote.

But, do I re-use the o-ring on the vale body or is it possible to get a new one? If so, where?

On another note, the fluid that was in the reservoir, and in the lines was 50/50 water and oil. Clearly I have a leak :(

I do have the $25 seal kit from ebay (RRitt's daughter I think?) so hopefully that will address that problem.

I'm hoping that the motor+reservoir will come with the needed o-ring for the valve body, but it's not listed in the parts description.
