My 1978 Chrysler 55HP has lost spark on one cylinder. I have put upper coil pack on bottom and lower pack on top.. still no spark to top plug so i know it's not the coil pack.. I have been told repair very unlikely and if possible, very expensive.. so I thought I would check one last time to see if I should junk the motor.:(.. I have available to me a 1994 Mariner 30HP.. was told motor by Yamaha and shaft & LU by mercury. He wants $1000.00. Do you think this is a good price????? Thanks for any input....

If you're going to scrap the motor because there's no spark on one cylinder, I'll take it!

This shouldn't be that hard to trouble shoot.

Re: Chrysler 55HP ready for burial

I was told that this motor uses the magnapower II ignition, which is no longer available thus leaving this with no repair unless I can find a retrofit kit.. which i've been told is no longer available..???? I've checked all wires for tight connections and broken wires.. all looks good.. coils are okay ... perhaps I should take it in and have it checked but I don't want to throw good money after bad... Is there anything else I can check????

Don't bother taking it in for service. Most dealers around here and I suspect near you will take one look at it and tell you they will not work on it--too old. And even if they did diagnose it, they would not be able to get parts. So yes, you will have wasted money
Before you scrap it, try contacting Franz at the Chrysler Crew to see if he has parts---but I doubt it. Those Mag II ignition systems were very problematic. Chrysler only made them for a few years then stopped because of reliability problems. You could also advertise on the Chrysler Crew website for parts needed. someone might have an ignition system off a blown engine. Lastly, put the engine for sale. Shame that a good engine is useless because of faulty ignition.
