hi guys
my outboard possibly 1970 model was running great untill she overheated (how badly i can't really say) then when we slowed down to idle a large amount of smoke appeared. we let her cool down and then putted along not to allow her to heat up again. Now she only runs at half speed. It runs great, doesn't overheat, but hasn't got enough power to get it up on a plane. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as i'm spending more time getting to the fishing spots then actually fishing. The spark plugs are firing but are very discoloured (black).
thanks
dan

ozzy

take a compression test, you may have blown a head gasket.if your compression is low in one of the cylinders pull the head and inspect,if the gasket is still good you stuck a piston hopethis helps bret

ozzydan,

Ditto force01. You lost a cylinder. There could be several reasons but a compression check is first order of business.

If the compression test is good, try cleaning the puddle valve assy. I've got a '70 55hp and that was a major problem for me. The engine would limp along one 1 cylinder(upper) and the bottom plug would foul after 1 hour. Cleaned out puddle valve assy and it runs like a champ.
