Hello, I have an issue with this motor and was hoping to get other’s opinions.

Motor sat for an undetermined amount of time. Maybe 25 years or more. Appears to be fresh water used only as there’s no corrosion. Every part was original to motor including spark plugs. As original part paint seal was intact.

Replaced
Spark plugs
Fuel pump diaphragm
Fuel lines
Water pump housing and impeller
Lower unit seals

Currently running 40/1 mix with mmo

First start was in a bucket, couldn’t keep it running. Let the mmo sit for a few days then took it out on the water. Opened up the throttle before it died and went for a 7 mile round trip at wot(45minutes). Should have stayed closer to the dock but was having too good a time. Once back to the dock I tried the lower rpm’s. It would die but was an easy restart. Progressively got better but as low rpm’s got better high end got worse. Noticeable hesitation when increasing throttle. Eventually it idled very well. By this point it was dying with anything over 1/3 throttle and hesitating up to that point.

My diagnose is dirty carb and the high speed jet got clogged as the low speed was just starting to clear out. I have since started in bucket and it is idling well I didn’t test the higher rpm’s.

Interested to hear what others think. Thank you!

Clean the carb and set the air/fuel mixture screw 1 turn out from lightly seated.
Then you have to fine tune it in water and in gear.
1-11/2 turn out for the air/fuel mixture screw would be a good set point.

Thanks, I forgot to mention I did remove the idle screw completely, inspect, and then reset to 1 turn out. After tuning for idle it was a round 1 and a quarter out. This is actually part of how I got it to idle well while on the water. I will clean the carb and report back.
