Chrysler force 140 carb adjustment starting point.

Hi all. I'm new to this site and new to boating. I bought a ebb tide with a 1981 Chrysler 140 on it and when I bought it, the carbs were off and the guy said he just had the carbs rebuilt. I bolted them back up and it did ok, but needs to be adjusted. Only 1 screw. Was wondering where is a good starting point on the carb adjustments? Im guessing about 1 1/2 out? but I dont want to run it too lean and mess the motor up. Ill tell you what the boat is doing. It will run at WOT untill about the time it planes out, then it sputters bad untill it dies. At Idle, it misses a little, but compression and spark is good. Thanks guys. and GREAT SITE!!

1 1/2 turns out is a good starting point. Read the sticky FAQs--Synchronizing carbs and timing--at the top of the forum page.

Also, check the fuel line for clogs and replace the fuel pump diaphragm and gasket. It sounds like it is running out of fuel.

Remove the carb bowls and be certain the floats are set correctly. with the carbs inverted, the floats should be even with the carb casting with just their own weight.

Frank. I thought the site would shoot me a e-ail if someone replied..lol..sorry so long. I really appreciate your responce. Im going to check the floats now. and then theck the timing. Ill let you know something shortly.

Well. I got it set now. cant wait to drop it in the water and hole shoot it. Its fireing up and idlin alot better since the adjustments. I really appreciate you Frank!

I got it in the water, and it was actually worse...I anchored out in my fishin hole in the Mississippi and I looked and thought and looked some more..FINALLY I found that when the top rear carb butterfly is exactly horizontal like it would be at WOT, the bottom carb butterfly is at about half open. I'm not sure if it is somehow bent or if someone popped it in wrong, or if there is an adjustment. I'm going to take the off tomorrow and look at them. Do you know if there is an adjustment for the rear butterfly on the one barrel carbs on a 81 Chrysler 140? Thanks again for the help.

Im answering all of y questions after looking hard enough at the outboard..lol..the rod on the right side of the carbs that connects the 2 rear carb butterflies, has a adjustment screw kind of hidden behind the throttle roller. It Syncs the 2 rear butterflies. Hope this helps someone else also.
