I have a 35hp chrysler

Model # 35742
Serial # 1147

Where can I get gaskets for the bottom end? And bearing cage o ring? I looked at the store in iboats and they don't list old enough motors. Mine's a 1967.

Can I make my own out of gasket paper? Does it need to be of marine quality?

Thanks.

Re: Chrysler gaskets...........?????

The only gasket you need on the lower unit is the parting line gasket between the torpedo and upper portion. I have made some out of poly. Paper is not good enough as it will let water infiltrate. Also, you must be careful to match the original thickness: This gasket helps set the pinion engagement with the drive gears.

The O ring is a standard one, try a bearing supply store.

OR: you can still get parts from franzmarine@aol.com

Oh, BTW: If your 35 is the one with the 10 3/8 diameter prop and big bore The O ring and parting gasket are the same in the Force 50.

Thanks a lot Frank. Excuse my ignorance, but what, exactly do you mean when you say you made a gasket out of poly?

Re: Chrysler gaskets...........?????

Everything except the pistons are swappable. The 35 had a smaller bore than the 45 which had a smaller bore than the 55. The 35 MAY also have had a shorter stroke, but the crank will still fit in the block. Rods were the same for all engines from 20 HP up. So, you could swap a 45 or 55 crank into your block and gain a couple of cubic inches. Ports would need to be modified to gain horsepower though.

I made a gasket from an old polyethylene food container and it seemed to work well. The polyethylene is soft enough to compress slightly, sealing the surfaces.

Thanks. So are you saying I could bolt the head from the 45 right on to the 35? The concave of the cylinder part of the 45 head is slightly deeper than that of the 35.......any concerns with that?
