I have a 64 model Sea King 20 hp outboard that won't fire. Where do I start to find ignition parts (points, coil, condenser, etc). Joe Bell

Re: Chrysler outboard (64 Sea King) 20 hp ignition parts

if the coils are good you can replace the contacts and condensers with an electronic module for about $5 each ..the manufacturers went out of business a few years ago so you have to make your own ....couple of transistors and 4 resistors not complex if you have any experience with a SMALL soldering iron...contact me direct by PM for details as I have not put his information on iboats yet. I think you will find the contacts very expensive and hey no need to take the flywheel off ever again !!!!

Thanks, Jerry and Fu-I will retrieve the motor from the big marine repair shop that doesn't want to fool with it and start over with your advice. I will likely contact you again on project. Thanks, again. Joe Bell

Re: Chrysler outboard (64 Sea King) 20 hp ignition parts

Fucawl, I have never used a SMALL soldering iron, but am OK (relatively speaking) with simple mechanical processes. I assume the module you mention consists of transistors and resistors, with correct specs, mounted on a base to be installed on engine chassis and then connected to the spark plug electrical circuit. I would appreciate your input, with technical specs, illustrations, etc. I believe I and a mechanic buddy of mine can take a shot at it. The motor is in good condition-just has not been used much lately, but had good compression when last used. Thanks. Joe Bell

If you have the year and if by some chance you have the number on the carrier plate, Standard Magneto Sales in Chicago should be able to supply you with parts. 800-624-6386

Why not troubleshoot/inspect the existing parts first to verify they are bad before replacing parts? Did they or you actually inspect/test the parts? jow

Re: Chrysler outboard (64 Sea King) 20 hp ignition parts

Not really-I suspect the the marine repair shop guy did not want to work on it and just pulled the cord a couple of times and declared defeat. i will follow thru on my own, but it is good to know there are still parts for the motor. Joe Bell

Re: Chrysler outboard (64 Sea King) 20 hp ignition parts

If its really a 64 then its a Westbend. Became Chrysler circa 1965.
A very brief check seems to indicate Ignition parts are the same from 4.5 to 35 hp.
Chryslers and very likely your Westbend /Sea King.A model number will help pin it down.
Very likely if you clean and adjust the points it will solve your problem.

fucawl, as a Cadet dumb ___, I don't know what the "PM system" is, but I assume it is the Private Message feature. I will check it out and respond. Thanks. Joe Bell

Model # is VWB-19084, which I am told via an internet source, is a 64 model, but that could be all wrong. Thanks. Joe Bell

Re: Chrysler outboard (64 Sea King) 20 hp ignition parts

I suppose if you are into experimentation and tinkering, you could follow through with the conversion. However, if it were me, I'd certainly find out what's wrong with it first. If the coils are shot, changing the points to transisters won't help a bit. On the other hand, that motor may have a Wico magneto, and they are notorious for developing a soft corrosion on the points' contacts that resembles mold. Whatever the mfr, polish the contacts shiny bright, adjust the gap to .020", and it will probably run......if the coils are good.

Re: Chrysler outboard (64 Sea King) 20 hp ignition parts

Tinkering F_R what are you on about ..millions of ATOM modules were made by the manufacturers and most 2 strokes without contacts inc all Briggs and Strattons have the equivalent of one of these modules fitted ..the idea is to remove the contacts and condenser so you dont have to tinker about

I have sent the diagrams to joe

Re: Chrysler outboard (64 Sea King) 20 hp ignition parts

I have a 7.5 Sears Eska, and I used a Red Atom Module for single and twins with variable timing. It was great for 10 - 15 hrs, then it took me to the other end of the creek and quit. I'm back to points, and I haven't been stranded since. I don't trust those modules any further than I could throw the facility in which they are manufactured, which is probably in China and staffed with slave labor, using the crappiest components available, and spiced with depleted uranium, arsenic and mercury just for the western markets.
