The plate on our 1970's 35 hp states

Chrysler Outboard Motor Corp
Hartford, Wisconsin

It has the old 5 point star shield on it as well.

I was always told that they were different divisions under the same parent company.

Probably because they couldn't make spare parts fast enough to keep them running. LOL

Re: Chrysler outboards?

Chrysler outboards started out as "West Bend Manufacturing Company" outboards. West Bend was a US aluminium manufacturing company based in Wisconsin, well known for their pressure cookers. I guess they saw all the aluminium in outboards and figured it was a natural fit.
Chrysler wanted to pick up some aluminium manufacturing technology, so they bought up West Bend in the mid 60s. They got the outboard division with it and renamed them Chryslers. Quite a number were made for retailers, such as department stores. So you find Chryslers under many different brands - Viking, Montgomery Wards, etc. I think the ending of OMC's Gale division in '64 had a lot to do with it. The retailers needed a new supplier.
Chrysler was hard hit by the downturn in the American auto sector in the early 80s and had to be bailed out by the US government. Part of the deal they struck was they had to sell off the outboard devision which I understand was profitable at the time.

USMarine (marine conglomerate including Bayliner) picked up the devision and renamed it FORCE. Unfortunately lack of development, etc, allowed them to fall behind. Mercury picked it up in the early 90s and merged it with it's own line of outboards by the late 90s, then dropped the name. By that point the name FORCE was enjoying a bad reputation.

Re: Chrysler outboards?

I don't know about the larger ones but my 20 horse is a good little engine. It's about as simple design as I've seen (which admittedly isn't all that many). The biggest problem I run into is finding parts for it.

Interesting history lesson there Paul. My impeller went out on me yesterday about a mile from the boat ramp. It was not unlike a pressure cooker at that point. Luckily at idle, enough water would circulate that it cooled the head to the point I could keep my hand on it. It was a long idle trip back to the ramp.

I sold my old Chrysler 70hp last year. It was a 1970 and still running fantastic. I sold it because of availibility of parts. Allot of parts are still around, but you have to search all over the country for them.

Thanx for all the info guys ... very interesting ..... one of my friends bought a 140hp Chrysler, they gave him a extra motor (exactly the same) with for spare parts, imagine all motors come with a second free motor for spares ....

Re: Chrysler outboards?

I had a 45 and 85 hp back in the early '70's. Simple design, as stated, but the 45 was gutless on a 16' Chrysler tri-hull (very light boat) and the 85 was a gas hog.

Re: Chrysler outboards?

I used to have a West Bend 45. It ran great year after year and was amazingly simple in design.

In fact, when Chrysler took over the company...they ran ads in magazines which showed pictures of "theirs" and "ours"....shots of the powerheads with the cowling removed.

I believe that for the "theirs" shot....they used an OMC. The difference in complexity was very obvious. The OMC had wires and linkages all over the place; you couldn't see the block! The Chrysler was so clean by comparison.

The text explained that their "superior engineering" resulted in simpler designs with less to go wrong, with lower maintenance cost. Of course; they didn't engineer anything...they were carry-overs from West Bend.

I'd like to get a hold of one of those ads. I've asked here before...and looked on e-bay with no luck.

I learned to ski with that 45 .....

Thanks for reading, Chuck
