I have been trying to start this motor with no good result. Today I decided to check the kill switch. With the switch "off" there is continuity when I placed the tester on both wires. I disconected the wires from the switch and there is still continuity when I put the leads on both wires. I then touched a lead to one wire where it connects to the points housing and the other lead to the same place on the other points housing where the other wire is connected and there is continuity. I don't think there should be any . Any suggestions ? It seems that the continuity between the two housings is killing the spark.

Typically a kill switch will tie the two coils together which will kill the motor. What you are seeing is the low resistance of the coils. Primary resistance on a coil could be as low as 1 ohm and if you are measuring them in parallel it will be under a half ohm. To get a true test is put your ohm meter on its lowest setting usually 2 ohms. Touch the two leads together. You will probably read about 0.4 ohms. This is zero ohms plus the resistance of the leads. Now if you read 0.6 ohms across the coils you are still reading a small amount of resistance.

At the lowest level and the highest level I am getting a full meter reading as if you are touching both ends of a single wire. But this is happening when touching a lead to both points housings where the wires connect.(2 points sets, possitive meter lead on one and negative touching the other)

Ok, I tried starting it with out the kill switch hooked up and it acted like it wanted to try and start a couple times. Also there were a couple times it backfired out of the exhaust. It is a pull start. I checked the sheer pin and it is good. New points and condensors. I did notice one set of points was set at .24 instead of .20. The coils look in real good shape. I began to wonder if someone replaced them and put the wrong coil to the spark plug. Does anyone know which coil on an 80-82 Chrysler 15 hp goes to the top plug ? The one in the front or back of the motor ?
Thanks !

Not quite sure of the year-

Ser. VWB-52120
Model. 48x-1004

At this point if it is easy enough just switch plug wires around. A backfire out the exhaust is a timing issue. Also check in dark room to see if you are arcing somewhere where you should not be. Could also be insulation cracked somewhere.

I got it running !!! :) I re-gapped the points and sanded the ends of the coils and now she takes right off :) . The only problem now is that there are 2 exhaust holes that no water is coming out of. I presume it is supposed to there. I have it in a barrel. I guess it calls for a impeller kit and I have to find a manual that has the Sea King in it.It sure did make me feel good to get it going ! :) Is the impeller kit hard to change ? By the way does anyone know the fuel/oil mixture for this engine. I used the mixture from my '57 johnson to get it going.

Glad to hear you got her going. Nothing like that feeling of accomplishment knowing you did it on your own and did not have to write out a check for 200 bucks.
Gas is 50 to 1 using a marine oil with TWC3 oil. I would use Mercury high performance gear oil on it when you change out the lower unit oil. I have the Clymer and I really like it. It covers all the chryslers from 4 HP up to 130 HP. www.chryslercrew.com also has downloadable manuals for a reasonable price

To remove the lower unit there are 4 Hex head screws at the base of the motor leg. Remove them and while holding it in place with your hand lower it about a inch and you will see a screw holding the gear shift rods together. Remove that screw and it should come apart.

Aftermarket impellers are hard to find for a 15 hp. Mercury part number for yours is 47-F436065-2 and the cost is 11 bucks. If they dont have one in stock you can order one from them
