I just bought a Sea King 4hp model num VWB 52004F. I don't know much about outboard engines, it appears to have the various holes that would indicate being water cooles, but only exhaust, very little water is coming from them. I am trying to make sure that this is a problem before I harass the man who sold it to me, he claimed that it was air cooled...

Chrysler made a 3.6 air cooled engine with a small water pump that cooled the leg only. This was to keep from burning you. Reverse was attained by spinning the engine around 180 degrees. They did make several versions and your Sea King may be rated as 4. However, remember that the pump is very small and water just "spits" out the holes in the back of the leg.

They also made a fully water cooled 4 horsepower engine. If your engine does not have cooling fins around ithe head and cylinder it is this 4 HP. If it has the cooling fins, it is the air cooled engine.

Yeah there are no cooling fins. Guess I will have to take it apart and check it out, hopefully it is just some clog somewhere. Do you happen to know is the pump still in the lower unit? Or will it be just under the power head?

BTW Reverse is attained by turning the engine 180 degrees on this one too. I'll have to duct tape a broom handls in place to use in reverse!

Yes, the pump is in the lower unit. It has a tiny impeller--only about an inch or so in diameter. As I remember, these are more expensive than the larger engine's impellers. If you need an impeller, try franzmarine@aol.com I don't think the iboats store will have them.

I took the lower unit down. The screws to where the impeller is were extremely tight. I got two of them to break loose. The heads of the other two were starting to strip out, so I stopped trying. I blew out the tubes and stuff. I put it all back together, then ran it in my barrel again. It spit out more water by far, still not much. I think some of it comes out a different area. I expect that like the thread that you linked, the outlet is probably inside the lower unit, and just sort of exits wherever. Anyway I ran it for a few the water comming out got warm but never really hot. I think that it is actually working properly. I am next planning to take it out, paying close attention to smells and checking temp manually etc.

I had done some google searching, it amazes me how different the google search was from the bing search. I will have to remember to use multiple search engines next time that I have an issue.

I think that I am going to love this little engine. Tank built in, light enough to carry around wherever, great for the little areas that I will be pan fishing.
