 I have a 1966 Chrysler 50hp model 50661. I don't see any kind of timing marks on the motor. I don't have a manual. Can someone tell me how to time this engine up? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I want to go fishing.

Re: Chrysler timing help

Yeah! I have a 67 and NO--there are no timing marks. The engine timing was set up by the length of the tining advance rod and some measurement--I forget exactly what.

However: If you want to time it, noting stops you from putting a line on the flywheel and a matching one someplace convenient on the block at top dead center. Count the teet on the ring gear and divide into 360 (degrees). You will then know what each tooth is in degrees ( I think 4.5 but don't quote me) Then count, looking down on the flywheel, the correct number of teeth clockwise to give 32 degrees advance. Mark the flywheel there and time to the mark on the block at wide open throttle. Since there are two sets of points, and since a .0015 difference in point gap is 1 degree different, it is best to put two marks on the flywheel 180 decrees apart and set point gaps so advance on both cylinders is the same.

:D Thanks Frank, that is exactly what I need. You are a walking encyclopedia on Chrysler motors. I just wish that we lived close to one another so that some of your knowledge could rub off on me. Do you know as much about other brands ? If you do, you are a genius. Thanks again

Re: Chrysler timing help

I repair them all, and since I do not do it for a living, all my repairs are word-of-mouth referrals. But, the bulk of my experience is with my first brand, Chrysler.

I have done numerous repairs on autos, including rebuilding an automatic tranny--there's a trip!

I am one of those lucky individuals who can just look at an engine and basically know how to disassemble and reassemble it. None of them are difficult for me and while I can do almost any Chrysler or Force blindfolded,--indeed, somtimes on a difficult bolt or nut I will close my eyes to concentrate--with the other brands, I always take numerous digital photos and either acquire a manual or borrow one from the library. After all, I am repairing for another person and they deserve the best I can give them for their money. I do sometimes have trouble explaining procedures and diagnosis because a part of what I do is based on gut. That is so difficult to translate here on the forum.

I especially like to assemble things without the instructions--the more complex, the more fun it is.

AND: Even though I know with certainty that an engine I rebuild will start and run, the first time it fires in the driveway I am amused and amazed---Golly, it really works--never fails to give me a thrill. Like my first girl in the back of the Chevy. Ahhhh--TMS Too Much Sharing

Re: Chrysler timing help

Frank,
I have a question for you.
I bought a 85 bayliner and it has a 85 force.
The guy said it ran strong last summer. He hit a rock,so i put on a new prop.

The problem is it runs fine up to almost 1/2 throttle, then boggs out.
Also runs fine going slow.
When i hit full speed throttle,it takes off,and then dies down.
Cant seem to get full speed out of it.
Plugs are new,did a decarb on it 3 times, and was still smoking, but im sure that is fine.

Used a new tank of gas,and new tank and did the same,so figured out its not that either.
checked the wire filter on the motor,it was good too.
Also checked the diaphram,its good.

Pumping the bulb did not make a difference either.

Any advise on what would be next to check?
Thanks,
Scotty
P.S.
Mabe a good way to check for spark might be to pull one wire at a time, and start it hu?
If i would notice a difference, that would tell me im getting spark correct?
Newbee scotty ;)

Re: Chrysler timing help

Mick97, I know I am no Frank but I wonder if it could be a sheared flywheel key. Also, make sure your spark plugs wires are grounded when testing as you could fry your CD unit.
