Hello Sari and welcome to Iboats. Have you replaced the thermostat? When you serviced the water pump did you just replace the impeller or did you replace the whole water pump? Does this motor or did this motor ever run in salt water?

Hi Sari. First: Do you have water exiting out the back of the midleg? If no water is exiting, then it is reasonable to assume that no water or insufficient water is getting up into the block. When you changed the water pump, did the new one come with either a black rubber grommet or a white plastic adapter tube (depending on year) Either of these pieces plug into the output hole of the pump and adapt the pump to the brass water tube that runs up the engine leg. When you replaced the lower unit, did you make sure that the brass tube entered the adapter at pump output?

If the above are correct, try removing the lower unit again and put a garden hose right onto the brass tube. You may need to lightly clamp it. Now, if no water exits the leg (some should come out the two holes in the back, and some should just drop out of the leg where it would normally exit with exhaust.) or if the hose blows off the brass tube, you can reasonably assume that there is a blockage somewhere. Lastly, remove the head and check the water passages around the cylinders and the head. It is possible for sand or corrsion to partially block the water jacket. If this has happened, the engine may run well at low speeds but overheat at higher throttle settings. If this is the case, you can rake it out with a small screwdriver or other such tool.

then do the hose thing. if no water flow then thermo is still first place to look. it might have been neglected and mechanic told you it didn't need one because the bolts looked fused and he didn't want to mess with it. badly fused thermo bolts can snap off and mechanic ends up spending more time than he can possibly charge for without angering customer. I live in saltwater area and a lot of mechanics outright refuse to work on older engines because of fused bolts and will mention thermo bolts in particular because the worst case scenario ends up having to remove head. if you get good water flow then reinspect the pump installation and make sure that input passages are clear.

Re: Chrystler 130hp overheating !!help!!

Is it a temp gague that says its overheating? My 130 had a problem with overheating... Or so I thought. Replaced the water pump. Still overheating. Tried the blockage test like others have mentioned. No blockages. Temp gague said the top of the motor was at 240*. My hand said it was at about 120*. Changed out the temp sender (a universal Merc part, $20), threw in a new temp gauge, and it ran at 120* all day long on the hose. My clue that it was the temp sender was that the temp would slowly rise to about 160* or so and then peg.

Could it be he put the slotted stainless steel plate in wrong? I did it one time and it didnt allow much water into the block at an idle but get it WOT and was cooling just fine.

Here's the deal... You won't get water to come to the t-stat opening if you've got that cover off. Put the cover on, tighten the bolts, then start the motor. Run it. If you loosen the bolts, you can see the water drip out of there. Watch your temp gauge. When the gauge says you're overheating, try putting a few drops or so on the top of your motor. If they don't sizzle off immediately, then try touching it. If you can touch it for more than a few seconds, then it's not overheating.

OK, I do belive you have put the slotted plate in the bottom of your water pump in fliped over and backwards, at least it sounds like it. In the water pump houseing you will see where the water is forced up into the tube, there is a slotted hole in there, If the slot in the plate isnt lined up with the upper slot in the houseing then it will not force the amount of water up the tube until you go WOT. You would think it would but as I said in another post in here I have turned the plate over and backwards and my motor did the exact same thing you are saying yours is doing. Give it a look and see. Almost forgot, make sure your water pump houseing is sealed and that the gasket/seal isnt leaking.

Re: Chrystler 130hp overheating !!help!!

i would concur with rudedude. you may have been overheating before due to worn out impeller or pitted housing. I am assumming from your comments that you replaced the entire pump assembly including impeller, housing, gaskets, and seals. My guess is that you fixed one problem but created another with similar symptoms. The impellers ears need to be folded in correct direction, the woodruff key needs to kept from falling out, the plate needs to be right-sdie up, and the nylon riser needs to securely fit the water tube. When you take it apart to check run the hose test to make sure that your riser tube doesn't have holes in it and that water flows freely through your block. If you are careful and meticulous then it will work and you won't need to do it again until next year or two.
