Chunks of metal on drain screw

Just wanted to hear opinions on this. I am dewinterizing the boat today and I pulled the magnetic drain screw to drain the oil. There were several metal pieces on the drain screw, they were curved almost like they would follow the contours of a screw. I know this sounds very bad, but here is the background info.

It is a 1973 Evinrude 50 that had a slipping forward gear last summer. I had the forward gear replaced and since then I haven't changed the oil. I am wondering if these pieces are from the new gear that was put in? Maybe since it was new and everything else was 35 years old, it had to break in a bit? The boat shifts fine and runs up to redline with no problems. We will only have this boat for 2 more years, tops, so I am trying not to sink any money into it that I don't have to.

Thanks you all!

Hard to say. Gears don't have to wear in. The guy might not have gotten all the pieces out when he replaced the old gear. I'd change the oil and see what happens over the next few uses.

Ok, I will report back after a few days on the lake. One spot of good news is that it hadn't been started in 6 months and I hooked up the battery and the engine fired up within 1/2 of a second of turning the key.
