Chunks on Spindle

Help trailer gods! I was getting noise from this hub so I checked and the inner seal gave way, the inner bearing was falling apart and is seized on the spindle, along with some shrapnel that seems welded on. Where do I go from here? Try to wirewheel off the shrapnel and heat and beat the bearing off? Replace the spindle? Not sure if that is possible...looks welded on? Replace the whole axle? Thanks for the help.

I would lean toward just replacing the axle, but it can be fixed. Wire wheel is not going to fix it

Find a place which just sells the spindle and then a welding shop. The shop can remove and install the new spindle.

Too many years on a farm. Everything is salvageable....lol

The first thing I'd do is heat up the race and see if I couldn't drive it off the shaft with a pin punch. Getting the race hot enough is the trick.

Acetylene or MAPP gas should get it done.

The race is hardened steel. If heat didn't work, I'd take a cold chisel and a BFH to it. Wear safety glasses...they usually just crack, but I've had them shatter (explode) as well.

Once you get the race off, take a power brush to the shaft to clean it up.
The sealing surface for the seal looks to be intact. If worst comes to worst, install a speedi-sleeve and go from there.

A stiff wire brush typically used on a grinder.

While I agree with Dingbat on most things, Looking at the axle and springs, I would lean more towards a new axle and spring set up. That bearing got hot, the axle doesnt appear to be heavy. Might be cheaper in the long run.

I was able to take off the shrapnel on the spindle with a knotted wire wheel on an angle grinder and heat and beat the race off. Ready to rebuild the hub and move on. Thanks!

If the inner race spun on the shaft you may have to stake it to get it to fit tight. done that several times over the years To make a bearing race fit after a bearing failure

It was actually a bearing that seized, not a race. The races were worn but not an issue removing them.

Then you’re good polish up or put a speedy seal on the seal surface

I'll admit I'm not that experienced in this stuff but seeing daylight between that spring pack, and what appears to be the top leaf being deformed, I'd be looking at replacing the springs before they fail. Just me, your mileage may vary.
