Citristrip ok on old steel merc cowling? Shaft housing and lower unit?

I botched a paint job on my 1961 Merc 700 cowling and have decided that a complete do-over is in order. I was thinking about giving Citristrip a go rather than a wire wheel but all the Citristrip-related discussions I can find on iboats are about people using it to remove paint on gelcoat. Has anyone here tried this stuff to remove paint from an older steel cowling? I've used the stuff with great results on many wood projects but I'm a bit concerned that it never comes up here regarding old outboard restorations. Maybe it's not powerful enough to penetrate factory marine paint?

Woodonglass, thanks for the tip but I ended up just finishing up with a can of citristrip I already had... The whole job took about 45 minutes. I was inspired by your photo so I just took my own:

Here is my first pass about 10 minutes after application:

It ended up working great and I used about 1/3 can on the whole cowling. Finished up with mineral spirits and later isopropyl alcohol. Now...to paint...again
