That looks rather nasty!

Maybe some "Sea Foam" would help.

???...What's the big deal? It looks like the rectifier bolts came undone...just tighten them down and you should be good to go....geez...

You know the old saying 2 out of 3 anit bad. IT DON'T APPLY TO OUTBOARDS. Before I put the motor on I checked compression (all good at between 118 and 120), spark (nice blue crisp and hot). But I didn't pull the carbs and clean them. She fired up nice and easy on the hose. Ran her for 1/2 an hour pulled one plug wire at a time to make sure she was making power on all 4 cylinders. So off the the river we go. Pulled away from the ramp and Clack Clack Clack Clack Bang; What Just Happened.

looking at the rust on that rod I would say water intrusion & I can't see any oil on it ether. sorry to see your motor go like that.

Hmmmmmmmmmm .... well ........ you will certainly be getting more airflow, so I think you should adjust the mixture for LOTS more fuel!

In the midst of all the funn'in, I'd guess water intrusion that rusted the roller bearings, and when you started it up rusty rollers don't. But I don't know that for a fact without more inspection. Dead is dead.

Balance is important,an EASY fix would be to pull the top pistons out ,and make a 2 cyl.out of it.I realize you probably have 3 perfect cylinders,BUT,balance, you NEED balance.Uh Oh,better get Maaco.

Re: Clack Clack Clack Clack Bang; What Just Happened

Hay everyone don?t feel too bad for me. The motor cost me $50 and a week end to put it on.

I?ll put the 90, that was originally on, back on this week end and be back running by Sat. afternoon.

Oh and BTW, for those who like to figure out why, what looks like rust on the connecting rod isn?t. Somehow the camera flash made it look that way. If you shine a flashlight in the hole everything looks nice and shiny, except of course the score marks on the #1 cylinder walls.

Re: Clack Clack Clack Clack Bang; What Just Happened

For those interested I installed the 90 two weeks ago and finally got the chance to make a test run yesterday. It worked fine. Now lets all go Fishing, Tubing, Water Skiing, Knee Boarding, Cruising, and above all have a good time.
