Clamp to test?

My boat has been dropped off to be painted.

I'm about to finish up the repairs to my outboard.
Chrysler 55 hp.

Since I'm not sure I"m going to keep this outboard. Plus I've only started on the stand.

Is in necessary to bolt the engine to the transom? Couldn't I just clamp it to test it out to make sure the boat and motor handles well together before I bolt it up?

Since you're only going to "test" it out, clamps would work fine. However I'd make sure I have a strong safety chain on it. If it you're happy with test then bolt it on.

Good idea, just incase.

Once the boat is done, I just want to take it out turn a couple of laps around the river and see if/what I need to do to the motor. If it's good, Then yes. I'll bolt then.
