Clarification question about the synchronization sticky....

For step 8... the instructions say to turn the needles 1/8 at a time.

Question : Does this mean turn needles on all carbs by the same amount as I proceed? Not just one carb at a time to see where the engine starts to sag or sputter, right?

I'm guessing that I adjust all carbs by the same amount and then set all the needles at the same halfway point between min and max. Is this correct?

I'm a little confused, because my carbs were previously set with different needle settings. From 7/8 to 1.5 turns out.

Thanks.....

YES!

Although the manual has a slightly different procedure for setting low speed needles, setting each separately, I prefer to move all three the same amount at each check. The manual does instruct to set all three needles to the same position. So, your engine was set incorrectly no matter what method is used.

My reason is that all three carbs are balanced as to airflow by the cast-in balancing tubes in the manifold on three cylinder engines and the balancing tube on four cylinder engines.

So: Start at 1 1/4 turns out and move all three needles the same amount each time until the rich and lean limits are found. Then set all three carbs to the midpoint between lean and rich.

Finally, perform the on water test---nothing can substitute for this.

On other posts, it has been recommended (not by me) to set all three needles to 1 1/4 turns out and indeed most engines will run quite happily at this setting, but not as efficient as they could.

I understand your concern NM..I had the same question a while ago...BUT FRANK I do have a question about different bores. (Sorry I dont know if this is considered hi-jacking or not because it's on the same topic) 86 85hp Force...Now that I have 2 cylinders standard bore and one .040...should I adjust individually? It has not hit the water yet and I have all needles at 1.5 turns out for land testing. It seems to run fine and starts right up with 4 seconds of cranking and choking.

A .040 overbore is less than1/2 cubic inch in 25 cubic inches at 3.375 bore, or .02. The engine will never notice it. For all purposes, it is a standard bore. Treat it as such.

Many of you may not know this, but Frank and Jerry actually have microfish Force engine brains. This, along with thier knowledge database makes them, indeed, the fastest Force Outboard computer known to mankind. It's this ability to extract information at inmeasuarable speeds that set these guys apart from the rest. I remember once, my engine was running rich, and Frank messaged me, asking if everything was OK. Jerry was soon to follow, with the same question. I like to refer to them both as " The Force Whisperer".........
