I am trying to find out what year my Mercury outboard is. It's a 50hp, brown stripes on cowl. Serial # A160751. I am tring to locate a starter motor for this engine and the serial # doesn't seem to match any ranges I find. I believe it is an '86 or '87 and is on a 16.5' Sylvan Backtroller that I bought from a friend at work. Does anybody know of of a good site to find starters for this? I really don't want to spend $250+ on a starter motor.

Thanks, Tom

Re: Classic 50 identification

1987 you look up parts as a 45hp not a 50hp - the reason they came up with classic fifty was because it was an excellent motor that got even better and back then they didn't rate hp at the prop hence now they are labelled 45hp just incase you were looking it up that way also dont even mention classic fifty to the parts guy it doesnt show up that way in the books - just a 45hp - 4cyl. is what they need to know . i have an 88 model - excellent motor .

You have a 1985 MERCURY 50 ELH, Engine serial number: 0A160751 Engine Model number 1050555.

Your original starter part number from mercury was (73521) But the number has now Superseded to (898265005) STARTER MOTOR ASSEMBLY. MSRP: $295.83

Try checking into having the starter rebuilt at a auto starter/Alternator rebuild shop in your area.

PARTS CATALOGS - 45/50 H.P. verado7 is correct with using 45/50 H.P.

Thank you,
You sir are correct, I called my local marine center and he agreed it is a 1985. I pulled the starter yesterday and indeed the part # is 50-73521, $300.00 from the marine center. I found some on ebay for <$80.00 w/free shipping, I may go that route. I pulled my starter apart to see if I could get it working, no go. Although there was alot of crap in the brush endcap, I reassembled the unit and it still won't operate. No Memorial Day boating for me :(

Thanks again for your help,
Tom
