Classic 50 prop shaft fell out

I cranked my engine recently after it has been sitting all winter. When I turned it off ( it ran for about ten seconds ) the prop and prop shaft were hanging out. Since I never check the prop, I assumed it just vibrated loose over the years and finally fell out. I screwed the prop and shaft back in, and now it is hung in forward. Is there a trick to getting the prop shaft back in, or do I have bigger problems.

Remove the shaft and in the end of it you will find a hole the shift pin goes in it and has fallen out find the pin it's in the unit or you have lost it when it fell apart grease it so it don't fall again point to the front and reassm

I don't have a clue what a Classic 50 is, rather it's a 50hp or 5, or how old it is.
No wonder I don't mess with old outboards :%:%

Re: Classic 50 prop shaft fell out

Don, is just the 44 cu. in. engine and is spring loaded to fwd gear if the carrier and shaft fall out (around here it's because they froze up) the shift pin has no retainer like Mercruisers and can fall out also so there is nothing to hold the clutch dog in neutral or anything but fwd. The unit should really come down be cked and resealed but I see 2 or 3 a year that just stick them back together and get away with it--Bob

So the carriers come out too....... That explains it. When I read his post it was like the prop shaft with the prop on it fell out and the carrier was still in the gear housing.
What keeps the carrier in when this happens? Doesn't it strip the threads of the the housing or the retainer nut?

Don, some of the times it strips everything, carrier and hsg but the ones with the plastic nuts seldom hurt anything. Beats me. Way off the subject and I hate to be a adder oner but I am fastenated with your emoticans and ability to post service pages try as I can I don't have much luck, wish I could I have alot of old service information that at times would help people--Bob

Re: Classic 50 prop shaft fell out

Well, I found the pin. It was laying in the lower unit. Although I did have to tear up the cover nut to get it (the prop shaft ) back off. I didn't want to buy a $60.00 tool to remove a $4.00 part. The old one looked kind of stripped anyway. I still can't figure out why it would be plastic. Anyway, I have a new one ordered, which I should receive any day now. Thanks for your help Laddies.
