Classic 50 speedo hole in LU

While doing a water pump rebuild, i was cleaning out the speedo pickup hole in the LU as it was completley clogged. While getting the hole open, a small metal tube about a 1/2" long came out and it had a taper on one end. I cleaned it out and just pushed it back in. There didnt appear to be anything keeping it in there so what do I do to keep it from falling out? This part does not show up in the shop manual and not sure of its purpose either. Never would have known it was there if it the gonk in it would not have stuck to the wire I was using to clean it out.

most likely a sleeve-insert for the tube,make sure to clean all the way through; to the front of LU (edge)
clean-out drain holes under cavity-plate so that all trapped water can drain for winter storage

Hole is completly cleaned, but the little tube I'm talking about is in the little hole in the front of the motor where water goes in. Dont see any way it could connect to something else though. What us the cavity plate? After I ran my motor with muffs from changing the water pump, I had to redrop the LU to flip the exhaust plate later that day. When I did, I found a lot of water lying on top the water pump and in front of it as well. How is that water suposed to drain?

there are drain holes in the LU around the the shifter & around the water pump housing usually plugged with sand

the Cavity-plate is the two plate on both sides (look like wings)

Can these be cleaned without dropping thre LU?

You could blow air up into it to temporally unplug them but the sand/dirt did not get removed and will eventually will slip shut again. a must clean/drain is necessary for winter storage
