Re: classic case of ethanol poisioning

BTW, I'm assuming this is a problem whether we're talking outboards, or I/O's, or automobiles?

My marina told me to use Starbrite startron in my gas so the ethanol would not a problem.

Fuel stabilizers are and have always been a good choice for fuel that must be maintained longer than a few months. It does not however protect fully against phase separation, nor is there any product that will.

Alcohol generally dissolves fiberglass resin, promotes phase separation, degrades hydrocarbon fuel lines, and dissolves the shellac used on older cork floats in gas tanks and carburetors.

Like I've been saying on this forum, get a gallon of Engine Tuner from any BRP dlr, put it in a bucket and let your carb parts soak in that. If you happen to forget them for two days or so it won't hurt a thing. When clean, rinse with water and blow out.

Re: classic case of ethanol poisioning

Every single additive that claims to protect against ethanol does so by dissolving water in the fuel. Except Startron, they all do so by adding alcohol -- with some it's IPA, others methanol, and startron claims some kind of proprietary formulation of some kind; if it works as described in the literature it ought to be good, I can't say cause I don't use it.

But none of them can prevent the effects of alcohol on fuel system components, nor do they claim to, as far as I know.

Adding alcohol to the fuel increases the amount of water that can be dissolved in the gasoline; it also further reduces the energy content, increases the octane rating.

Lot of misinformation on the web (not in ezeke's links), people believing that E10 draws excess water in from the atmosphere, enough to separate.

Fact is, five gallons of E10 can dissolve about half a cup of water. (That's a quart for 50 gallons),

When it hits that limit, it stops pulling water from the air. That's why you can only get phase separation if water leaks in from the outside.

A sharp drop in temperature will do it, too if there's enough water in there already.

I have heard that it eats up the varnish on the cork floats. Be sure to get a BRP kit with the new plastic float.

I just bought two Sierra kits from Iboats and can't tell if they're plastic. Anyone know? Also, i believe that using ethanol treatment in the gas will help prevent all of these problems. You guys are really making it sound like we are running acid through our motors. I was told to use any ethanol treatment that doesn't contain alcohol, it will say on the back.

sorry for all of the questions, does shellac look like black plastic? how long does phase separation take to occur? I'm in Florida and go boating most weekends. My 16' bay boat's tank is only 15 gallons and I try to burn as much as possible each time out, but never fill up on the way home. After reading all of this, I think I may need to adjust my process. :)

Were they in BRP Engine Tuner ?? You also may want to start a new thread as this ones kind of old.

This thread should have been titled, "Consequences of neglect".
