I've acquired this outboard and have got it running. I cannot find any serial number/model stamped on a plate anywhere.

I'd like to check over the cooling system, replace impellor/thermostat etc but cannot find any resources online for this engine (service/workshop/user manual etc).

If anyone knows where I could look, I'd appreciate it.PXL_20201109_161640056.jpg

You will be able to find a usable manual for ~$15 or so if you look. Once you determine if it does or does not have points, will determine what manual you need. Very little changed with them over the years. They went from points/ mag to a CDI system, back to points/ mag for a couple years in around '82-3 and then back again to CDI. Johnson and Evinrude motors of the same year will be basically the same

As far as the impeller/ tstat.. The lower comes off with 2 bolts and the water pump is right there. Just make sure the water tube goes back in correctly since there is no pee hole, and you are only looking for a water mist in the exhaust

I own several omc motors and the 1978 4hp with mag flash ignition is the only one that I have with CDI . I like the universal magneto but I've never a had any problem with the 4hp. I have a couple Mercs that left me stranded because the ignition failed. And I have limped back to the launch with my old omcs on one cylinder . I suppose for someone that doesn't want to maintain there motors the CDI might be easier .

the more things are easier to work with the more complex and expensive they are to fix :-(

Even my new Chistmas lights are remote controllable from my warm living room & they can blink fade or stay steady with sealed multi-color LED "bulbs".
If they fail me.... sorry WHEN they fail me .... they are going in the bin.

Screw bulbs I can fix :)
