If I added hardener to mine now what might happen to that with out hardener already on it. Or would that just be the weak link so to say.

It would be the grip link, and perform like any 1 part coating. The hardener would give you the hardened surface, and better cure time, theoretically.

Yep, I see NO issues. I'd add it and get the benefit. Mines been on 2 years now and is wearing like iron...well maybe not iron but it does not chip easily.:joyous:

So this will work yes? Pulled for your link wood:

For 1 qt paint
3/4 cup of Acetone & 3/4 cup of Majic's Reducer. (Mineral Spirits)
2oz of Hardener (1/4 cup/4Tablespoons)
(NOTE: Only add Hardener to the amount of Paint that you will use in an 8hr period.) DO NOT use after this 8hr period.

I mixed up 2 cups (1/2 qt) at a time using 1oz of hardener, 1/2 cup of reducer.

One Quart should yield two coats of Paint.
Shoot first coat in the morning.
Wait 4-6 hours. (will this be same for ezpoxy)
Wet sand with ScotchBrite Pad LIGHTLY to knock down any nubs or bugs.
Dry.
Tack cloth off with 50/50 mix of Mineral Spirits and Acetone.
Dry.
Shoot second Coat.
Let dry over night
Repeat wet sand and Tack cloth
Shoot 3rd and 4th coat if needed.

I plan to shoot this in the am early in about a week. Vacation time is upon me again. That should give my 1st coat (base coat) more then ample time to cure.

If I should wait 24 hours between coats that is no problem either. Heck I can wait a week between coats. I am planning to sand my 1st coat completely smooth as I can see a few viscosity checks (runs). But directions said not to go back and touch up no matter how tempting. Those spots are soft still so hence I wait till I get back.

If you haven't noticed I am in no hurry. I just want to get it Painted and flipped before speckled trout start their run up the river. This is just a project for learning and to have something to do in the evenings, I always want to learn to do this so here I go. Also I get a good bass boat out of the process.

Let me know if I have got the mix right and wait time. I plane to waste about 2 cups playing with my spray gun and getting it right. I have been spraying water and some rustoleum on cardboard not to bad of outcome either.

Yep, that's the formula. Make sure to mix and let it cook for 30 minutes and Only mix 2 cups at a time cuz once the hardener is added the Paint is NO GOOD after 8 hours. 2 cups was plenty for 1 coat cuz with the thinner you get 2 1/2 cups of product.

Re: clean hull with? primer issue and questions on easypoxy

Well it's been a week since I last had to ask a question. So here is a bit of history. First coat of ezpoxy was applied last week (30th). Well i went out this morning thinking I would do a lite scuff and then lay on another coat. Boy was that wishful thinking or what? What I did find is I could use my finger to roll up the paint right off the primer. Was like the primer had not been prepped correctly. I know I sanded it with 200 till it was smooth and ready for the ezpoxy. I wiped it down with 120 thinner 3 times and then a tackcloth. The ezpoxy I stirred for around 10 - 15 min with a stir thingy for my drill, moving it up and down to be sure I had the full can being worked. I stirred it till i saw no streaks in it and used a stir stick to make sure the bottom edges got mixed also. It was mixed well. So the questions is what did I do wrong or was it maybe the weather, humidity? It was hard to the touch my finger nail would not leave a mark. After it rolled up I tried a few other spots and they did same thing, I then hit it with the water hose and it blew right off. So I connected the power washer and began to strip it again. Well it is down to the primer and 3/4 sanded again with 200 grit. Any ideas guys?

Re: clean hull with? primer issue and questions on easypoxy

Are you using EasyPoxy 1 part or Ez-Poxy 2 (2part) by Pettit?

Pettit has pretty specific recommended prep & primer steps that need to be followed prior to using their products. And pretty specific recommended thinning & application procedures.

The 1 part EasyPoxy doesn't require a 'cook' period after mixing, but should be applied in a specific mil thickness, or it will remain soft & yield unsatisfactory results.

How many of the recommended steps of prep, primer & application did you follow, exactly?

You didn't use their primer, correct.

There may be some confusion because after you copied & pasted WOG's paint info, I thought you were stepping back & using the Majic or Rusto paint rather then the EasyPoxy.

And I don't think the 200grit is the recommended grit for prepping the primer.....

Re: clean hull with? primer issue and questions on easypoxy

Okay the directions say 80 to 120 for fiberglass prep before adding primer. Did that.

Then I guess I should have used 150 instead of 220? If so no biggie, going to be re-priming anyways so I will just redo with 150 and then prime again. I am getting good with the priming. This will be like 6th coat. Sanding with 150 cuts through the corners fast.

But:
Surface: Bare Fiberglass
9. Apply a coat of Pettit’s 6149 Easypoxy White Under‐coater to smooth the surface and create a uniform base.
10. Sand the surface well.
No mention of grit.

Surface: Previously Painted
2. Thoroughly sand smooth with 150 grit sandpaper.

Applying the Finish Roll and Tip Method
12. Sand the first coat lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. (This is where I got 220 from. I figured if good for paint then good for primer to) Guess not. Man I am learning allot.

Will the 50/50 mix of acetone and mineral spirits work with ezprimer also for spraying

Re: clean hull with? primer issue and questions on easypoxy

What I posted in my thread is exactly what I did. I sanded the hull to 120 grit then shot first coat of the undercoater. I wet sanded it with a scotch brite pad, dried it then wiped down with the 50/50 mix then shot the second coat. Let them dry for 2 hours each. Repeated the sanding and the wipe down and then mixed the easypoxy and thinned with the 50/50 but I added the valspar hardener to the mix. Shot the first coat and let it dry in the hot sun for 6 hours. Wet sanded the color coat again with the 3M pad and wiped down with the 50/50 and then shot 2nd coat. Let that one dry over night. Repeated the above process the next day for coats 3 and 4. It went down like glass and cured hard as nails with absolutely NO ISSUES. That's my experience and how I did it. Temps were in the High 70's to low 80's in the morning when I shot it got up in the high 90's when it was drying in the after noon. This worked for me.

Your problem could be that you skipped the 92 bio blue step, which should be fine if you replace it with a wax/grease remover like i in the article i posted. No, wiping with the 120 reducer is not the same, it doesnt flash off as fast, and isnt formulated to lift the contaminates.

You could just use prep all, its cheap and works great.

Klean-Strip Prep-All Wax & Grease Remover - GSW362

Use it before and after every sanding/scuffing......

Re: clean hull with? primer issue and questions on easypoxy

okay here is my plan:

sand what I have with 150 grit (dry sand). Vacuum and wipe with 50/50 mix.
re coat with ezprimer x 2, 2 hours drying time or till touchable with no marks left, wet sand with scotch pad (brown in color) dry and wipe with 50/50 mix.
Then will allow to cure till next saturday after second coat. It likes to rain here in afternoons. depending on second coat I may try to spray if weather looks like it will behave. Then pull in garage if wife will move caddy out into the weather.

Now, should I shoot 1 coat of ezpoxy and let it cure a week or should I wait for next weekend to shoot 2 at a time?

Oh and if you guys look up "Murphy's Law" It will have my picture beside it.

The primer is stuck solid and I used the acetone for that. Will 3M paint prep work? else I will use the 50/50 mix. for degreaser I used TSP followed by 1 gallon of water with dishwashing liquid and 2 cups of ammonia,

You WILL get it. Are you using the Hardener in the Color Coats?

No Hardener in the Primer, only in the color coats.

Got it. Things didn't work out as planned today. Had family issues and cat issues so boat took a back seat. Will work on it this week and try to prime and paint this coming weekend. If it ain't raining again.

Do I need to thin the primer? If so do I thin like I would paint? I have a HVLP with a 1.4 mm tip.

I thinned mine with same 50/50 mix. About 20%

Would that be the 2 cups primer and 1/2 cup reducer?
