Cleaned carbs.New problem

1972 40hp Johnson.Would only run WOT if choke was pulled,so pulled the carbs and soaked and cleaned thoroughly.(did notice that float seemed to hook on main jet cylinder slightly when in empty position?).Haven't test run it yet but idled on the muffs and it now has a vicious sneeze that was not there before.Looked for any air leaks but cant see any.Please help !

Check your fuel pump for clogged screen or pin holes in diafram

Cleaned the screen and removed the pump,but it didn't seem like it should split to check the diaphragm,or could it just be corroded together ?

hello<br /> you now have a lean condition. either you have an intake air leak or something is still clogged in the carb. its time to start all over again. the idle fuel pick up passage likes to clog or the gasket between the bowl and body may leak.<br />if the float was stuck down on the main pick up tube this post would be about fuel pouring everywhere but not about sneezing.

Saboat...did ya' try turning the low speed needle out some? Might be screwed in to far.

Did try the idle jet adjustment,but no joy.Should I have put any sealant on the carb bowl gasket before closing up to prevent air leaks ? Also,if there is air being sucked in elsewhere are there any usual suspects to look for and how do you "see" the fault.

Make sure your throttle butterfly is closed while your idleing. I just rebuilt by carbs and put the linkage in the wrong hole, letting air in while in the idle position. Caused it to sneeze like crazy. Just a thought<br /><br />Good Luck

The butterfly stays open constantly,it only closes when the choke is pulled.Does this mean I'm missing a linkage of sorts?I did try pulling the choke while it was sneezing but it didn't seem to make any difference.

We'll I was taking a stab at it, guessing it had two butterflys like my evinrude 25hp. On mine there is a butterfly at the back of the carb for the throttle, and a butterfly at the front for the choke. The choke stays open all the time, and the throttle stays closed until about 3/4 throttle. Your engine may not be set up the same.
