Cleaning cabin headliner

Question for your restoration pros:

The woven fabric headliner (see pics) in the '94 cabrio needs a good cleaning. There are many marks and spots from the guts of popped spiders to water stains and whatnot. I'm hesitant to go at it with a steam cleaner or shampoo it because I don't want to soften any glue holding it up and risk causing the headliner to come apart or sag.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to deep clean this material?

From looking at the picture, is there any backing board behind the fabric? It looks like it is just stretched across some support wood. If that is the case, I would try using a good cleaner and if that doesn't work or even turns it into a much worst project, then replace the material. It wouldn't cost as much as you may think. I've replace headliners in vehicles before and the cost is usually under $20 for the material. And the standard typical fabric shops do carry many different colors and textures exactly for headliners... JMHO!
