cleaning engine

I was wanting to spray clean my engine with something to make it look halfway nice. I figured right now while I have my magneto with all the iginition stuff off would be a good time. Is this safe to do this? Can I just get engine cleaner and go to town spraying the powerhead and just let it drain down the bottom? I guess I would need to cover the choke hole...right?

its a 71 Johnson 9.5

My favorite method of cleaning the engine is to spray it down with WD-40, brush the WD-40 around thoroughly, then blow it off with pressurized air.
