This is a great site , now on to my question ...Can I use a degreaser on my motor and then wash it down with water and let it flow out the bottom of the motor with out doing any harm to the engine ?

Might depend on the engine.
Would not do it if it has breaker points under the flywheel.
Would probably not do it if trim relays etc are not properly covered up.
Would definitely not do it if battery cable still attached.
If OIS ignition system, remove the optical sensor first.
But if you decide to do it, let the engine dry, electric spray in all contacts after, then perhaps start.
After complete clean, a thin layer of Anti Corrosion on all metal parts.

Do you really have grease on the motor, or is it just dirt? Castrol Super clean (purple stuff) and Spray 9 remove most dirt, grime, oil and grease, and are not too harmful to plastic parts. If you can leave the airbox on to keep it out of the carbs and not spray the ign system, that will help.

Normally, yes, we do it all the time on many motors (some we will not). Particularly before rebuilds or used for sale. It is very motor specific what needs to be covered/removed/avoided.

We use a heated water pressure washer. As a general rule, you want the motor tilted up ~1/2 way or more. to avoid filling carbs, improved drainage. Air silencer PLUS DRAIN often off, line plugged. carbs plugged...Looking at your previous posts it appears you have a carb motor.

Best to use compressed air to accelerate the Lyon's share of drying. Hand turn flywheel a few turns and run motor until warmed, unless you are certain there is zero water/mist intrusion.

Done correctly, a quality pressure washer can work wonders, even remove rust and corrosion - if there is safe access.

What motor are you considering.

The motor is a 1980 115 Johnson , just replaced the water pump and rebuilt the carbs , i think it's just some dirt and not really a build up of grease so i might just use a rag and some degreaser to remove it .

Sounds like you have a plan. Compressed air works well, if available. for tough spots, spray with your degreaser and blast air while wet. WD-40 works pretty well. Tougher grease, brake cleaner works well and evaporates, although it may slightly dull painted surfaces.
