Cleaning question

I am a new boater & just purchased a 1993 Wellcraft Excel. The boat needs a good washing & I am curious what I can & should use to wash the exterior...dish wash soap, boat wash, etc...<br />Also, most of the exterior is a little bit dull, but it is very dull near the top rear of the boat near the swimdeck. I know I can use a cleaner to remove exidation & matbe bring bacl some of the shine but what do you guys recommend?<br />Thanks in advance for your help. This is a great forum!<br />John

Hi Kirk,<br /><br />Well, as far as the exterior goes; the boat wash products are bio-degradeable...so you can wash the boat while it's in the water with less pollution worries.<br /><br />As for on-land washing, I don't think it matters much what you use, but remember that if you use anything stronger like dish wash soap....it will remove any wax that you've put on there. I guess that's not a problem with an initial wash though.<br /><br />As far as oxidation...you should do a search here on faded gelcoat...many products and procedures that you can pick from will pop up.<br /><br />Generally...it's a matter of using a buffing compound to remove the oxidation...then a polishing compound to restore the gloss...and then some good coats of wax to seal the surface. Most gelcoats bounce back real easily...you will be amazed.<br /><br />Take a before and after picture...and show us!<br /><br />Thanks for reading...Chuck
