I just noticed the venetian blinds in the BR with the sun hitting them are disgusting. They have a nasty layer of dust in every nook and cranny.
What's the best way to clean them.
I'm thinking hang them outside (somehow), spray with cleaner and hose off?
I've ruled out the pressure washer!:) ...and probably Seafoam!
Throw them out and replace with bamboo?:D

Why would you rule out the pressure washer?

I think blinds with the slats all twisted and bent lend a unique, antique appeal to the decor!:D

Those little fuzzy brushes used to dust keyboards, etc work pretty well. Wonder Wand or something like that??

1. Open the blinds fully before removing them from their window tracking and placing them in the bathtub. If you don't have a bathtub, a child's plastic pool works just as well.
Step2
Fill the bathtub with warm water about three quarters of the way full or enough to completely cover the blinds.
Step3
Add 1 gallon of white vinegar to the bathwater and swish it around with your hands. The vinegar will corrode the grime on the blinds without eating into the blinds themselves.
Step4
Let the blinds soak in the bathwater until the dirt has completely disintegrated. Stir the water to loosen surface dirt from the blinds.
Step5
Empty the bathtub and rinse the tub and blinds in cold water. Use the shower or showerhead attachment. Cleaning your bathtub fully after finishing with the blinds is highly recommended.
Step6
Allow blinds to dry outside on a large clean towel in the summertime. During cold weather, pat dry blinds using a soft clean towel before hanging back on the window.
Step7
Dust blinds weekly to help maintain the blinds and prevent the build up of moisture and grime. An old sock on the end of a broom handle is a good way to get between the slats.

Whether they're made from silk, bamboo or any other type of material they would still need to be cleaned periodically, the lady that cleaned our home when i lived in Texas showed my wife an easy and effective method by using the little brush end on the hose of the vacuum cleaner, the result is no mess and all the little nooks and crannies are taken care of.

If your blinds are also greasy, then the wet cleaning method would be the way to go.

The trick is to clean them often - once they get "crudded up," they are hard to get truly clean. If your are metallic, you can use a damp sponge to get each slat individually. TD's idea of taking them outside is a good one too.

I do it the easy way - I buy cheap Wally World blinds. I try to keep them reasonably clean, but if they get too funky, I just replace them!

I put ours in the tub with hot water and Simple Green. For the real dirty ones we use a soft brush on.

At times, I think hooking them up behind the boat and dragging them around the lake a couple of times would work too! :D

They're not greasy...just heavy dust.

T2F - You would have to jump in on this one!!!! Have I told you how much I love your posts?
I really like the bathtub idea. The blinds are wider than the tub. I assume I would want to extend the blinds as far as possible (?) which might be an issue having to put them in the tub sideways...or is this a minor detail?

I figured any kind of brush - which I don't have anyway - is going to create another mess unless I were smart enough to do it outside (50/50 shot here!).

Jay - wife isn't the best housekeeper. Her idea of cleaning is replacing.

I've seen variations of different brushes made just for this purpose. Here's an example one one that connects to a vacuum cleaner.

http://www.amazon.com/Mini-Blind-Brush/dp/B000FIEWVU

I have also seen some that don't work with the vacuum.

The swiffer dust mops (the small hand ones) work pretty well for dust. If they're really bad, I'd say do like TD does. Maybe soak them in the tub for a while first before hosing them off.

Real men do not clean blinds!!!!! :D

I have a strategy.
My wife loves to play dumb...or maybe not, she is blond!
The next time she holds her hand out, I can say "These f@#$ing blinds are G.D. disgusting - you need to throw them in the tub...."

She did say I can have as many *****s as I want - as long as they clean.
The problem (so far) with that has been my pickup line.:)
I've warned her when I start cleaning - she's out of a job.
Lucky for her I have too many toys to occupy my time.

That's what I do.

All of my blinds are wood, so water is out of the question.

The obvious fix is to remove said offending blinds as a preemptive strike against lazy clinging dust terrorists.

Oh yeah, and why on earth do the blinds get greasy, anyway? Maybe I don't want to know the answer..

Just to set the records straight - Dust and only dust, lotsa dust. No grease or anything remotely resembling grease, liquid and/or slime.
Besides, not as young as I once was.:p
