Shark Hide has/had a cleaner called Super Renews II. E-mailed the people at Sharkhide from their web-site. e-mail bounced.

Charles

I FOUND IT!!!! I leave my 22' in water most of time. Alge and mineral deposits, especally on the outside.
I've tried it all, and this works for me.
Knock off as much as possible with pressure washer or scraper. Then use "The Works" toilet bowel cleaner from Dollar General. 1$ a bottle and 4 bottles cleaned my 22'. Have to keep applying to the mineral deposits, it will foam up when it hits it, pressure wash off. Better than the buffer I used last time.

after the big stuff is cleaned off try toonbrite it's about $18 per 3/4 gallon you will need one for each side. it will take it to the day the pontoons were made. then buy a $20 10 inch made in china buffer can't remember the name of the alum. polish (wal-mart) alot of work and they will look like new.

Originally posted by CharlesW:
After less than good results, in fact practically no results on the caked growth. I am looking for more suggestions. Used Zing Aluminum Pontoon Cleaner, about $35 for a gallon, recommended highly by a boat supply store. Didn't do squat for the caked on growth. Made the aluminum above the waterline look great. I have a question about the different suggestions that have been made, Alumibrite, muriatic acid, what have you. Have you used the product on pontoons that probably haven't been cleaned for years? The stuff is 1/16" to 1/8" thick in some areas. My next product, I would like to be something that actually will remove the stuff. Could I get some feedback from some of you who have had really bad growth and were able to remove it without resorting to a sander or grinder? Right now, I am totally lost. (That happens a lot though, so I don't get too worked up about things.)

Charles

Take it from a man that got totally fed up with trying to keep pontoon logs clean!
Toon-brite,Aluminum Cleaner is the last product you will ever try and if you want showroom use Toon-brite Aluminum Polish & Restorer after cleaning.

Re: Cleaning very caked pontoons?

Have no idea if this will help, but there is a cleaner for glass top electric stoves that I have used for a lot of things.

On the glass top stove you get a lot of stuff burned on that is impossible to remove with out this stuff. I think it might be slightly abrasive, but very slightly.

I have used it to clean pots and pans that I could not get clean, get paint (overspray from a repair) off the windshield, etc.

Very gentle and pretty cheap. You could probably use it with a buffing wheel to see how it works.

Just a thought.

Bennington pontoon mfg. Is recommending aluma-brite to clean aluminum pontoons--it appears to be the same product as oxi-solv which is no longer marketed but was terrific in removing oxidation and scum line from aluminum pontoons
